Cannabis (Medical Marijuana) Cures Autism Spectrum Disorders

Medical Marijuana

On the very last night before my staff put my book, Medical Marijuana, into production for publication, I read an incredible story by Steve Davis about a man and his wife who “cured autism” in their daughter with cannabis. It’s not really incredible; it is exactly what one would expect.

It is important for the entire autism community to wake up and take on the cause of legalization and use of cannabis for autism spectrum disorders. If one studies the pharmacological profile of cannabinoids, it’s easy to conclude that cannabis is the ideal medicine for autistic children and others with neurological conditions. In terms of safety it makes criminals out of the doctors and psychiatrists who administer exceptionally dangerous pharmaceuticals.

Doctors told the couple that their daughter was near the most severe end of the autistic spectrum and offered little help or hope that the girl could even partially overcome the condition. “We were desperate. We got a high-CBD tincture,” said the father, referring to the marijuana compound called cannabidiol, known for its sedative rather than intoxicating effects. “We gave it to her. Within an hour, she was in deep sleep for the first time since we noticed the autism, or maybe the first time in her life.”

Medical marijuana helped their daughter calm down, have a better appetite, and relate emotionally in a warm and caring way, not typical of severely autistic children. “When the medical marijuana takes effect and she is so present and happy, I have tears in my eyes,” the girl’s mom explained. “She is beating autism. She now looks us in the eyes. She smiles. She plays with our cat. She started getting along with other kids. The autism would not let her do that before, but with the medical marijuana, she can do that.”

You can count on one hand the number of American doctors willing to recommend medical marijuana for children. Most doctors and social workers say marijuana is always bad for children, including autistic children.

I had already written about Mieko Hester-Perez who went public on television about giving medical marijuana to her autistic son Joey. She says it saved his life! I published a few years ago the words of an extremely experienced doctor in the autism area:

Learn to diagnose yourself so you can treat yourself and your loved ones! Learn More

“It seems to me if one is going to need to use drugs, one ought to consider a relatively safe drug, like marijuana,” said Bernard Rimland, Ph.D., formerly of the Autism Research Institute. “The reports we are seeing from parents indicate that medical marijuana often works when no other treatments, drug or non-drug, have helped.”

Writing in Neuroendocrinology Letters and the European Journal of Pharmacology, Dr. Ester Fride of the Behavioral Sciences Department of Israel’s College of Judea and Samar says, “A role for the endocannabinoid system for the human infant is likely.” She notes that in animals, the endogenous cannabinoid system fulfills several important developmental functions including: embryonal implantation (which requires a temporary and localized reduction in the production of the endocannabinoid anandamide), neural development, neuroprotection, the development of memory and oral-motor skills, and the initiation of suckling in newborns.

Dr. Fride strongly recommends the use of cannabinoids in pediatric medicine. She notes that “excellent clinical results” have been reported in pediatric oncology and in case studies of children with severe neurological diseases or brain trauma, and suggests that cannabis-derived medicines could also play a role in the treatment of other childhood syndromes, including the pain and gastrointestinal inflammation associated with cystic fibrosis.

Steve Davis concluded, “Medical marijuana helped their daughter calm down, have a better appetite, and relate emotionally in a warm and caring way not typical of severely autistic children. Not only that, it was less expensive and far more effective than the pharmaceutical medicines it replaced.”

Calm down is the right description of one of the general properties of cannabis—it helps people calm down and relax and shed off some of the stress without any of the severe problems and side effects of pharmaceuticals sold for this purpose.

In case you are out of touch or have your head buried in the ground, stress is a growing problem in every corner of the globe and it affects our health enormously. Everyone is in reality needing to calm down or stay calm, because stress is heading only upward.

image

According to the National Sleep Foundation 27 percent of Americans are having difficulty sleeping because of losing their jobs, the economy and their own personal finances. Stress is increasing and will get worse as the world economy contracts. Thus I recommend magnesium chloride always be used with cannabis.

The involvement of free radicals in tissue injury induced by magnesium deficiency causes an accumulation of oxidative products in heart, liver, kidney and skeletal muscle tissue, and in red blood cells.<#_edn1" class="miniRef" id="_ednref1">[1] Magnesium is a crucial factor in the natural self-cleansing and detoxification responses of the body and it certainly helps people sleep better than any pharmaceutical. Nothing will de-stress one’s cells faster than raising one’s cellular magnesium levels.

Conclusion

“Because of the drug war, tens of thousands of autistic children and adults will remain locked in by autism, and unable to get a medicine that really works,” the mom says, “Closed-mindedness prevents researchers and parents from openly exploring the healing effects of medical marijuana…. a plant that gave us our daughter back.”

The closed-mindedness this mother speaks of is a silent type of violence. People would stagger under the psychological weight of knowing how horrible our institutions really are. We are a violent and vicious race and I think that statement is sustained no matter how much we all think good of ourselves. The war on drugs is just one terrifying example, and the childhood vaccination programs, in which the vast majority willingly participate, is another.

Medicine is in its darkest days and the entire human race is suffering for it. Medicine and industry made a devil’s bargain and the arrogance of professional men just gobble it up as they earn their gravy.

I have a severely Autistic Daughter who is extremely ritualistic. When she was an infant I would take her to any Dr; I thought could help including Dr. Rimland and Dr Lovas at Ucla. She is now 43 years old and I had to put her in a home since she is bigger and stronger than I am. Her Dr. has her on many medications but I don’t see any improvement and throws tantrums , doesn’t sleep at night even with all the medications. I talked to her Dr. and showed him articles on all the studies on CBD oil and the results they were seeing and asked if we could try her on it. He said he disagreed and the studies were flawed. I can’t see why we can’t try it since all the medications she’s on don’t help calm her down. When she doesn’t get her way or something sets her off she goes berserk and destructive. How can I find a Dr. in or around Orange Ca. that would work with me.

  • Its like you read my mind! You appear to grasp a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with some p.c. to pressure the message house a little bit, however instead of that, that is magnificent blog. A great read. I’ll certainly be back.

I wish i knew how to ingest or smoke cannabis without getting a headache. I know lots of people for whom cannabis has worked wonders. Any ideas?

    • Claudia – IMVA Staff

Some say this could be due to the type of marijuana smoked, since it is not regulated you can’t be sure if additives have been put into the mix. Others say its a sign of addicition….after long years of smoking. Others may have more information than me and I hope they will share it with us here.

  • I cannot stress this enough, the raw form of cannabis keeps the carboxyl groups intact! The benefits of consuming RAW cannabis add 100 to 1000 times the benefits of MMJ. See the science at http://www.cannabisinternational.org/

To the skeptics that suffer from ignorance and apathy regarding the cannabinoid system, may I suggest the works of Dr. Raphael Mechoulam and others. See https://www.google.com/search?q=Dr.+Raphael+Mechoulam

Still have doubts? See this video list at http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL51C04BEDC3339AB4

Yes, every substance on earth has the potential for abuse, but that does not make them any less useful. See the healing potential of cannabis with your own eyes at http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5841A72EEE323452

As stated earlier, all medications have the potential for abuse. Often the benefits are dose specific. The form of administration and the proper compounds for each patient are a key factor in the outcome of any medication. Once the damage is done, often times there is not a cure. that is exactly why we must rely on continuous medications to relieve the symptoms of disease. One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.

The tip of the iceberg. If only more people had the courage to see what might be possible instead of listening to a stifling medical community, politicians, Big Pharma, & the moral majority-which is neither. Collectively we have far too much knowledge & wisdom by now to continue to let so many people suffer needlessly. If you’re opposed to marijuana, then do not use it. But do not tell me, or anyone else, I am not allowed access to a potential cure for my illness, pain & suffering.

I have been recovering from chronic Lyme Disease for over 8 years now thanks to the blunders of conventional medicine. This illness presents a host of debilitating symptoms all by itself, from which I am finally recovering, before one is faced with the ignorance & horrors of allopathic medicine, from which I probably never will recover.

Thank you Mother Nature & a few health care providers for helping me get what was left of my life back on track. I no longer suffer in an endless cycle of excruciating pain, but instead am able to now work part time & feel more like a human being & husband than a pile of garbage.

Marijuana along with a host of herbs & supplements, including magnesium chloride, dietary & lifestyle changes are all contributing to the success of my long overdue recovery, which was blatantly denied to me for so many years. Thank you Dr. Sircus for your pioneering & humanitarian efforts so desperately needed in today’s world of diminished compassion & common sense.

  • very interesting… to be honest I am still sceptical of marijuana…perhaps I am too indoctrinated…am open, but sceptical…

your point on Magnesium was highly enlightening to me… I am very sure that most of the stuff we are or were exposed to end up in our brains… (I really endorse Dr. Klinghardt’s work – he kind of saved me)…so detoxification for me is the most crucial thing to do in nearly everything … and I want to add Chlorella to your list for detoxification…

what I do not understand is how marijuana is supposed to help the brain? Alcohol does not, it only influences… does marijuana detoxify??

i didn’t kow about sulphur yet…so MSM must be great?

    Thx

    Dan

If we give our bodies what it needs, it can fix, repair, and renew itself, and I would think this would also apply to our brains.
Doctors operate on people and children, and sometimes they take out part of the brain, some people even with high IQ, and normal life had MRI and found out that they only had about 5% of brain matter. Some experts say that we only use 2% of our brains, maybe that is all we need? I guess we just dont know yet how Marijuana exactly effect the brain functions, or how it kills the brain cells,or how it alters the brain other than just kill the cells, more research
needed. And maybe smoking it would be also different, than using the oil, or juice or eating it in soups or salads.
However if it cures cancer, and is good for many medical conditions, I would chose Marijuana oil, or juice, with baking soda and magnesium oil. In my opinion using chemo and radiation for cancer is insane, and I think some doctors know this, and they would not use it themselves, but not all doctors, some believe in the Frankenstein medicines
      and science.

      • Patricia

        AMEN, AMEN,AMEN.

      • Luis

Marijuana does not really kill brain sells…the experiment performed on monkeys was over done…too much smoke (any kind) will kill brain cells because the lack of oxygen supplied to the brain…the monkeys had masks and I think they were exposed to long periods of times without breaks between puffs in order to get adequate amounts of oxygen.

    • kay

Go to YouTube and watch the movie “Leaf” It tells the story of how the leaves of Marijuana
are an excellent cure for all types of illness. You will see scientist at a University in Southern California discuss that it’s time for us all to understand how remarkable a plant it really is.
The leaves of the plant are technically a vegetable and should be classified and used as such. Then put phoniextears into your browser and read the site. We are a free people and we really need to push to keep and regain in some instances (Marijuana being one of them) our freedom on all fronts. The freedom to maintain and pursue good heath is precious, and Marijuana helps people who are ill recover and maintain good health!

Once again I feel I am beating a bulls eyes and everyone skips over to the “outter rim” here. Pot KILLS brain cells, that’s been proven in both the inner and outter ring of experts! I am shocked Dr. Mark, because most of your work I respect so much, but treating SYMPTOMS with a known brain-cell killer seems like such an oxymoron to me. WHAT is causing Autism?? It is NOT the lack of Cannabis in our daily diets for heaven sake. The Pharm companies you tout such an atrosity to the medical profession does exactly the same thing…treat symptoms and not causes, which in turn cause more problems needing more “symptom relief”.

As I said, I send your material of minerals and anti-immunization stuff to lots of people and totally agree with your stuff there, but I used to be a pot smoker and can also testify that I will never regain the brain cells I smoked away. I don’t argue that its natural and ways less addicting physically. But brain cells are brain cells, they cannot be replaced.

    Keepin it real.

    • Pinky Hernandez

      Dear Lisa,
In saying that you will never regain the brain cells you smoked away, does that mean you don’t drink alcohol?
None of us is born perfect and then there are those who by no choice of their own, are born with a disability.
I am a 58 year old grandmother to Roxie who has Rett Syndrome. I personally have fibromyalgia, glaucoma and cervical dystonia. I am on 7 medications, some of which could ‘kill” my liver…..but I take them not only because my doctors prescribed them to me but because my quality of life would suck without them.
I can’t ask my granddaughter how she feels or what is hurting her, is she thirsty, is she , because she can’t answer me. People with Rett Syndrome cannot speak. Roxie is now having seizures, another “symptom” of Rett Syndrome, which is caused by a mutation of the XX chromosome. Yes, a mutation in the brain.
We all have to choose our battles Lisa. Pot kills brain cells. Really, so does alcohol…………and the worse part of that is that it is socially accepted and legal. We can agree to disagree.
      Pinky

    • In fact, cannabis has been scientifically shown to have a potential for creation of brain cells and acts as a neuroprotectant after brain injuries.

The form of administration that is preferred is in the raw form keeping the carboxyl groups intact as opposed to decarboxilating the acids with heat.

All medications have the potential for abuse.

      May I suggest a look at http://www.cannabisinternational.org/

    • kay

You don’t need to smoke the Marijuana, you need to eat the leaves and use the gel made from the plant itself. This is about healing not about getting high. Further you can and do
create new cells throughout your body including your brain throughout your entire life.
You can recover in mind body and soul. See my post about the documentary “Leaf”
on YouTube, watch the film and then put the the phoniextears site into your browser and explore it.. May God speed your efforts.

Regarding the medical system–I have a 20-year-old granddaughter who has Asperger’s Syndrome. She was on Prozac for much of her life, and before that was on “Concerta.” for ADD. After she turned 18, on her own, she stopped taking Prozac. She said when she was on Prozac, it made her feel like killing herself. There were many times when she used to cut her arms whenever she felt anxiety–it may have been related to the Prozac. Now she is much calmer, although emotionally immature for her age. I believe that she is using medical marijuana. She has hinted that she is using it, but has not stated it directly. She does have a medical excuse–she had surgery at one time for scoliosis and a metal rod was put in her back, which causes her chronic pain, according to her.

My brother just returned from a meditation retreat. He met a former radiologist and also a former nurse there, who both had left their professions after being disillusioned with the medical system.

Is cannabis a true cure or just a safer, better temporary cure? If so, please tell me the active component/mechanism that it contains because I am sincerely interested in all.

To date I have only ever heard of two chelators that pass through the blood/brain barrier and mop up the nasty mercury which has destroyed our children’s neurons in the brain. They are alpha lipoic acid aka thiotic acid (see Andrew Hall Cutler’s protocol, PhD biochemistry and/or Dr. Hulda Clarke’s protocols, PhD Physiology & ND) or fulvic acid (see Dr. Gabriel Cousens website, MD & MD (H) & scientist).

These professionals know all the evils of neurotoxins like mercury and how to successfully get rid of the supposed irreversible autism spectrum disorders, including ADD, Aspergers, etc (as you have cited repeatedly in your articles) but they never mentioned marijuana as a cure.

I may have missed it but actually Dr. Cousens actually finds problems with cannabis which I also would be very interested in hearing your opinion on. If you could possibly review his article and let me know, that would be great too. Please check it out at:
    http://www.gabrielcousens.com/DRCOUSENS/DRCOUSENSBLOG/tabid/364/PostID/103/language/en-US/Default.aspx

You and the other professionals I have listed above are all current day geniuses and nothing less than godsends. You all deserve the utmost respect.

I thank you in advance for any time you could spare on my 2 questions. They are once again, what is the active ingredient in marijuana that can get to the brain to clean out the mercury and what do you think about Dr. Gabriel Cousens’ article on marijuana. Your insights are greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Claudia

    • Claudia – IMVA Staff

      Dear Claudia,

In fact Dr. Sircus has written an essay in response to Dr. Cousen’s opinion a number of months ago….I believe it was in August or October of 2011. Dr. Sircus disagrees with Dr. Cousen’s opinion and stands by his belief that using a more natural plant for various disorders is backed by plenty of science and within his own spiritual beliefs. If you cannot find this on the blog site archives, it is included in his new book on Medical Marijuana which will be coming out in a few weeks. The essay title is Marijuana is or is not good?

Often it takes a number of products to bring about a cure and Dr. Sircus does not subscribe to using only one product in any situation. We are very familiar with Alpha Lipoic Acid and Andrew Cutler’s work with this. We have found that there are chelators that allow the removal of mercury from the body even when amalgams are still present (Chelorex). He also believes that to obtain full removal of mercury from the body, other substances need to be used with any chelator…..substances such as edible clay, and that when mercury is removed from the body storage sites where it has accumulated first, the mercury will then move out of the brain and then be allowed to bind to clay and possibly other things such as zeolite and leave the body safely. Adequate minerals such as magnesium, selenium, Vitamin C, taurine and others all play a part in supporting adequate mercury removal. Chelators are always one part of Dr. Sircus’ protocol.

So to answer your question about does cannabis offer a “cure”…the research and verdict is not all in yet, but it sure looks like in some cases it does and in others it should be combined with a full protocol attack of his recommendations. How can anyone deny the anecdotal evidence we have seen with autistic kids and children with cancers who have made remarkable turnarounds when using marijuana in one form or another….it is looking like its the the cannabinoids (primarily CBD, which has fewer psychoactive properties than THC) combined with the THC in cannabis that play a huge roll in some of this….and the research to find out. more specifically, goes on.

In addition it is very good at reducing and controlling some symptoms arising from various medical conditions such as pain and nausea. There remains a huge controversy over medical marijuana and Dr. Sircus supports the use of medical marijuana.

The outcry against its use by many people and states in the US is actually putting a stall on doing the necessary research to prove its value or lack of value. Most don’t want to accept that there is great value to be found and learned about cannabis and all its components. That’s MY personal opinion.

  • Mark I can not argue your point, pot increases the blood levels of oxygen by 44%. But the problem is the blood brain barrier, where blood goes not. But the oxygen according to Rudy Tanzi 1992 Noble Prize for proving Alzheimer’s is caused by amyloid plaque at the blood brain barrier. That oxygen can be transported across the same blood brain barrier with bio available organic sulfur and our children no matter their age are no longer lost in their own minds. Both conditions are vaccine damage, sulfur could repair the damage after clearing the blood brain barrier.
Our source are the moms, also back, just sulfur added back into the diet.
