Detox Cleanse with Baking Soda

Published on June 27, 2010

Wood Bowl with Baking Soda

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) lives up to the image on the Arm & Hammer’s box; it is the ultimate heavyweight workhorse medicine that every healthcare professional and parent should use to diminish toxic poisoning from the Gulf disaster. Combining this with other strong but basic natural substances like magnesium chloride, selenium and iodine offers us the best chance of weathering the toxic storm that continues to build over the Gulf region.

Sodium bicarbonate is the number-one item in any protocol to treat exposure to harsh chemicals coming from the oil disaster. The government should step in to direct supplies of bicarbonate into the area. Millions of pounds should be immediately distributed and stockpiled since supplies at the local supermarket are not going to last long when the public catches on to the danger and how to do a detox cleanse. The very best treatment, when one first notices a foul smell, foul taste or flu-like symptoms, is to jump into a bath with several pounds of bicarbonate and magnesium salts.

So deep are the protective, buffering and neutralizing properties of bicarbonate that it is used even with radiation exposure to protect the kidneys and other tissues. In a world that is already overexposed to uranium and mercury, sodium bicarbonate becomes even more important because mercury and uranium oxide directly attack the nuclear material and mitochondria of the cells.

The oral administration of sodium bicarbonate as a detox cleanse diminishes the severity of the changes produced by uranium in the kidneys.  And it does this for all the heavy metals and other toxic chemicals including chemotherapy agents, which are highly lethal even in low dosages. Since depleted uranium weapons were used starting in the first Gulf War, the United States has polluted the world with uranium oxide and it is showing up more and more in tests doctors perform. With a half-life of several billion years we had better be prepared to get used to dealing with the toxic effects and help our bodies clear it more easily through the kidneys.

What does bicarbonate really do? Baking soda is like a strong janitor mopping up the messes and carrying the poisons away. This janitor protects tissues and leaves an alkaline film or trail behind to make sure everything stays safe. In medicine, sodium bicarbonate is like the cleaning and security man proven loyal through decades of faithful service and it can be brought in to provide some sort of protection in cases where people are suffering from radiation toxicity.

So useful and strong is sodium bicarbonate that at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, researcher Don York has used baking soda to clean soil contaminated with uranium. Sodium bicarbonate binds with uranium, separating it from the dirt; so far, York has removed as much as 92 percent of the uranium from contaminated soil samples.

Blaise W. LeBlanc, a former research chemist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, identified the toxic byproduct hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) of high fructose corn syrup, which is fed to honey bees, as a potential culprit in colony collapse disorder of bees. LeBlanc has a solution to minimize HMF toxicity: By adding bases (such as sodium bicarbonate, lime, potash or caustic soda) to HFCS, the pH rises and HMF levels drop.

Sodium bicarbonate can safely remove paint, grease, oil, and smoke residue, decreasing workers’ exposure to harsh chemicals and eliminating much of the hazardous waste associated with other cleaners. “Sodium bicarbonate is able to clean in areas where other substances pose fire hazards because baking soda is a natural fire extinguisher,” says Kenneth Colbert, a general manager for Arm & Hammer. This is the reason it’s used by oncology centers to control chemo agent spills, and it’s actually used intravenously to protect patients from the hazardous toxicity of chemotherapy.

Sodium bicarbonate is found in various places around the world in the form of mineral deposits. The uses of this natural cleaner are endless. It can be used to treat illnesses as well as clean a variety of household items. Sodium bicarbonate is often found in household cleaners and laundry detergents because of its ability to lift dirt and grime and its efficacy in eliminating unpleasant odors. It is no surprise that this magic powder is the most effective and economical way to clean oil-stained clothes.

Bicarbonate and Magnesium Emergency Medical Baths

Simply put, there is nothing like a hot soak in a magnesium chloride bath with bicarbonate before bed. Such soaks are heaven on earth for people who suffer from insomnia and the feelings of restlessness in the limbs. The same goes for what I call magnesium massages where someone rubs magnesium oil directly into the body. It turns out that these kinds of casual treatments can be intensified to the point of being full-blown medical treatments. For emergency purposes, 1 to 5 pounds of bicarbonate (for children much less) can be used as long as that amount is balanced with magnesium salts found in Dead Sea salt, Epsom salts and magnesium chloride bath flakes (1 to 5 pounds as well).

The point is that if you are feeling any of the symptoms being reported in the Gulf region emergency, a sodium bicarbonate detox cleanse should be immediately initiated if you want to neutralize the hazardous toxicity. The United States government should organize a worldwide effort to provide to the citizens of the Gulf area large tonnages of sodium bicarbonate and magnesium salts. Clay also should be provided for both internal and external cleansing. The same goes for glutathione suppositories, which should also be taken instantly upon symptom onset, and plenty of spirulina should be on hand and taken regularly. The key to avoiding long-term harm is to help the body deal with the chemical assault at the very moment one notices foul smell, foul taste or flu-like symptoms.

What if you take this internally? I took one pill and my blood pressure rose, which is common with most supplements I try (not all, but most), and this time I could feel my right kidney (I wouldn’t say pain, but more of pressure). Would this be detox symptoms? Or should I resist from continuing? I hear and read so much conflicted information on sodium bicarbonate.

  • Wow . Interesting !

  • So when you take baking soda internally, does the detoxing stress the liver and cause you to feel sick when detoxing? My liver has been compromised already from TB treatment. How do you know when you have reached a “critical mass” in eliminating toxins with the protocol?

Is it possible to detoxify from the mandated flu shot that is pushed on us healthcare workers??

I wanted to see what you think about activated charcoal for the purposes of eliminating toxins from inside and outside the body. this may be a additional source of healing when baking soda supply is low.

Do you honestly think the the government, that is trying to kill people and reduce the population all over the world including the US is going to push a cleanse? I would suggest that once DC or any of it’s agencies get hold of this two things will happen…toxic additives will be put in the Soda thru the FDA and it’s incestuous relationship with the “new world prison” …and the price of the wonder cure will sky rocket….Anything the government touches becomes corrupted…Wake up…they don’t take care of anyone but themselves …or there would not be any contamination in the Gulf because the use of depleted uranium is a war crime…..Is this article just another fear mongering plant? or Is the author of the article that naive and uninformed?

My name is William Teets and I just came across this post. I’ve had tinea versicolor for several years. The doctor said I would always have it and only gave me several prescriptions to ease the itch etc. The side affects of the drugs were worse then the disease.

This is what I did to get rid of it. Borax, Twenty Mule Team.

1/8 teaspoon for women in one quart of water and `/4 teaspoon for men. Drink it throughout the day.

You will be amaze what it does. It kills fungus.

Its been four years now and it never came back.

    • Ivan Ivanov

Borax the cleaning stuff? Is that even safe? How is that better than just plain baking soda? I’ve had tinea for 3 years now. It just won’t go away. I’ve tried over 20 different treatments now. Let me know. Thanks

      • Jennifer Hilliard

Hi Ivan, I agree too. I had tinea versicolor. I scrubbed the affected areas with norax and water. It got rid of my scalp dandruff. I dont use commercial soapd to wash with anymore. Borax kills odors and leaves my skin baby soft. After one week of using borax , the fungus is gone. I had it 6 years. I now ingest the borax to detox metals, kill the candida on the inside and decalcify my pineal glad to help lower my TSH thyroid hormone. As i have an underactive thyroid too. Inflammation in my body is gone. No more TMJ.

A suggestion only is to check out Dr Simonicini and his website; and website: pHkillscancer and there has a protocol called Don’s protocol. and also the Cancer tutor websiteregard the baking soda and maple syrup or honey trreatment. Do not know about interactions with other medicines. If doing baking soda make sure you do not have any calcium in another form, or you will get very ill from alkalosis. And suggest a suitable pH test strip by ‘pHion’ that makes a urine and saliva test strip for pH. Make sure the baking soda and water and honey as per pHkillscancer website it is only taken 2 hours before or 2 hours after food so as not to affect digestion. It is up to the individual to be responsible for their own protocol and doing what is best for them. All the best.

Dr. Sircus encourages the use of cannabinoids (CBD) for psoriasis. He also highly recommends Ancient Minerals Mineral Oil. Would the mineral oil be as effective as the CBD for my scalp psoriasis?

    • Hi Rose,

I think there is some confusion here. Dr. Sircus recommends Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil not mineral oil. Mineral oil is a commonly used petroleum product that is used in cosmetics. Magnesium oil on the other hand is very high in magnesium and yes using magnesium oil on the psoriasis will be very helpful. Some people have seen the use of magnesium oil alone to clear up skin problems.
Whether it (magnesium oil) will be better than CBD cream is not known and you will have to try both and see which works better for you.
Note that regular mineral oil does not contain any cannabinoids and very little magnesium if any at all. It is claimed to be very moisturizing but it is not of the medicinal strength of magnesium oil or CBD.

Are you familiar with a skin condition called granuloma anulare I have a friend who has been diagnosed with This about a year ago. She is on blood pressure medication . Can she do your baking soda protocol will it help to get rid of her condition so Farr she has not found anything that helps

    • Dear Jeanne,

You might suggest to your friend to look over the website and read about some of the protocol items and information regarding inflammations. Much of this would be pertinent to her healing the condition you describe. A lot however depends on the history, the current treatments she is on etc. so more information would be needed by Dr. Sircus. I think there are a number of ways that different treatments could be applied for her skin condition, such as with baking soda and magnesium chloride.
Dr. Sircus entire protocol is designed to support the immune system so our bodies can heal themselves.

I have this condition the only thing that works for me is to go to the Dermatologist and have them inject steroids in side, cortisone. Other then this I haven’t come up with a solution. I will try this baking soda as well..Mine is always more on the right calf then any where, also on my arms by the elbows. Wish you well Cheryl

Can a person who is taking high blood pressure medication take bKing soda ,

    • If you have a blood pressure issue and want to take sodium bicarbonate, always be sure you keep regularly (daily) monitoring your blood pressure for elevations. If elevations occur and persist, discontinue the use of sodium bicarbonate.
Some research has shown that it is not the sodium in sodium bicarbonate that raises blood pressure though the medical mainstream believes this is so and will not advise using sodium bicarbonate. References to this are in our book on sodium bicarbonate.

Hi, I came across your website accidentally. My husband had his thyroid removeda few years ago. He had a lump on the side of his neck for several years which he ignored. He was diagnosed with thyroid cancer which had spread to 80% of neck lymph nodules, which were removed as well. I noticed immediately after his op that his usual odour had changed. The bad odour which had a sort of cabbage smell had disappeared. Now to my next observation, which brings me to your web site. We have moved to a house in the last year, where the washing machine is in the basement. There is a severe problem with damp and cannot keep perissables, including leather in th basement or they go mouldy. I left a couple of cotton white pillow cases for a few days by mistake and to my surprise, I saw that one was covered in a yellow fungus which was my husband’s and the other (mine), though damp had nothing. Which got me thinking, as I have to change my husbands pillow case very often as it goes yellow within a few days. I had until now put this down to a very oily skin. I am now beginning to think maybe he has a severe fungal infection and it could be linked in with his cancer. He has the papillaire and folliculaire type 4 cancer. He also has a patch of itchy skin on his leg which has been hanging around for years. I can’t remember if this was pre cancer or post. I wanted tobsharevthisbexperience with you. I know that it would probably have fallen on deaf ears had I mentioned it to the doctor. They already seemed quite uninterested about me noticing the disappearance of the bad odour.

Thank you for posting.Baking soda also makes a perfect stand-in for many personal care products, which are adding their own twist to the toxic tangle of pollutants and personal health.

  • Becky Barth Cox

Thank you for all the information!
I did a candida cleanse for 90 days, which help purge some of the overgrowth from my body. Problem is… it has been coming out of my skin. I now have a major fungal infection (tinea versicolor) all over the upper portion of my body. I was also told that the amalgam fillings i have (mercury) goes hand in hand with fugal infections. I would imagine, if I’m seeing this on the outside of my body, there must be more on the inside.
I’ve been applying apple cider vinegar daily, as well as tea tree oil to all the infected areas, and i do notice less itching and redness, but do not see it going away. I’m eager to learn more about the use of baking soda to help rid this fungas for good. Which book would you recommend? Do you have any suggestions that might help my situation? What are your thoughts on sugar, alcohol, and white starches? Should these be eliminated from diet?
    Shine On~

    • Becky a number of things that Dr. Sircus recommends would help you….first yes, the dietary removal of sugars, white foods, and startches is necessary. Dr. Sircus is having good luck with treating a skin fungus with cannabidiol crème from Dixie Botanicals, and his full protocol for cleansing the body of candida is to use sodium bicarbonate enemas amongst other things. You can find this protocol in the Treatment Essentials book and there are also a number of solutions all over the Internet. You can use a skin paste of sodium bicarbonate on the areas of fungus that you see on your skin.

HI Becky, I also have/had Tina Versicolor. I went to a dermatologist who gave me the EASIEST, QUICKEST fix. He said to wash my skin with dandruff shampoo. It worked many years ago and I still keep some on hand when I see a dark area start to appear. I don’t think this is related to your candida cleanse. My mother had it, and so do I. But my sister or father did not. I believe it is an inherited condition like excema. I see you have a lot of responses. I hope this helps, it was a wonderful fix for me. Best, M.

      • Joe

        Hi Claudia,

Is there any risk with agitating the skin by soaking in Baking Soda? I heard it can damage the skin’s protective acid mantle. Is there a way to offset this; what is your experience. I am dealing with a lot right now systemic fungal candida and I don’t want to deal with additional skin wounds. Also I poured some Baking Soda and Epsom Salt in my sink water. I noticed some fizzing and I wondered am I losing any of these minerals like Carbon or Sulfate when I do this? Is it best to take two separate baths?

        Thank you for your help

        • No need to scrub it in too harshly, just let it soak.. Bybinfeatation of toxins baths can be taken once or twice per week if .heavily exposed/

Hello Becky! I also have tinea versicolor – what a pain! Since writing the post, have you discovered anything that has helped to resolve the rash? I’ve had it for several years and went to the skin doc who then prescribed me a drug, which helped get rid of the rash, but now it’s back – so definitely didn’t take care of the problem. I eat no grains, very low fruit, mostly complex carbs. Mine seems to get flared up with stress/anxiety from adrenal exhaustion. I’d love to hear what you’ve discovered! Blessings!

blue star ointment.. its like 7 bucks and works amazingly well.

Anti-fungal EffectDr. Fife credits the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut with the fungus-killing action. These special fats exhibit potent anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effects, with caprylic acid appearing responsible for the anti-fungal properties. Caprylic acid diffuses into the cell membrane of fungal organisms before dissolving them; this results in the spilling of the cellular contents and death of the fungus in question.

ApplicationDr. Fife recommends rubbing the oil into the nail both morning and evening; these recommendations parallel those for fungus-related skin or scalp issues. The oil melts upon contact with the skin. He also suggests oral consumption of coconut oil to improve systemic infections; doing so reduces the chances of instant recurrence, which could occur if fungi in the bloodstream continually take the place of their killed-off cousins. The Spink Foundation also recommends the use of coconut oil as an anti-fungal supplement, together with a range of supportive nutrients to boost the immune system.

ResultsTopical application should result in a visible improvement, such as a reduction in the thickness of the nail or a less “crumbly” appearance. This should begin to occur in a matter of days, although fungal organisms like candida and trichosporan are notoriously hard to eliminate from the body. Even if fungi are successfully killed and your nail returns to its former state, they may repopulate elsewhere in the body if you do not take systemic measures to ensure their demise. These measures include the oral consumption of coconut but may also include taking other antifungals like garlic, grapefruit seed extract and pau d’arco, together with a low-carbohydrate diet that starves the fungus

Becky.. I too had tinea v. For years. It is contagious. I think it is also called bea fungus. I caught it from a shared wet suit. When u get it cleared up if u haven’t washed and or drycleaned everything you will keep reinfecting yourself. Sheets etc. If you have been in the car in. 🙂 beach gear u can reinfect yourself off the seat belts. When u have done all of the above and are clear inspect yourself under a black light. It will show any spots u can’t see with the naked eye and then you can continue treatment. It wasn,t gone, you just couldn’t see it. It is not highly contagious. A person’s skin has to be in just the right, or wrong so to speak, condition to contract it. I managed to give it to my son. Seatbelt.. We finally are rid of it. If I had just known about reinfecting it would have happened a lot sooner. We cleaned the furniture also. Good luck, Norma

Are you adding good gut bacteria to your diet, via yogurt or supplements? You might want to look into adding glutamine to your daily intake as well, as it helps strengthen the intestinal walls. The small intestine, by the way, is proving to be more and more a major center of our immune system, so it makes sense to keep it healthy. Drastically reducing simple sugars like white flour, potatoes, etc from your diet is good for your gut flora, and therefor good for helping your immune system battle infections. Coconut oil, with tea tree and lavender added in, is very healing for skin fungal infections; I hope you get to try it. Best of luck to you!

I take Emergen-C almost daily, and I just noticed that it contains: Sodium (as sodium bicarbonate, sodium phosphate), 60 mg. Will this product and dosage still have a preventative/alkalinizing effect?

    • Lisa,

Check you pH to learn if it affects your pH….probably too small an amount but you will see it in your urine pH if you check it when taking the Emergen-C and when not taking it or later in the day. —– Original Message —–

***The following is my opinion as is not intended as medical advice or treatment.***

I read with interest the article on fungal cause of cancers in humans. In my practice in NICU patient after patient would survive premature birth only to succumb to fungal infection of the blood, to put it in lay terms. In my personal life, my father was in late stage lung cancer and I argued to no avail with my mother to PLEASE STOP ADVISING HIM to use his steroid-type inhaler (as opposed to the typical rescue inhalers that people should continue to use as ordered). The steroidal inhalers foster FUNGAL growth in the lungs, especially in cancer patients and other immuno-compromised individuals, and what I’ve read here from the doctors from Johns Hopkins and Mayo Clinic only makes me MORE certain that my father’s inhaler contributed to his traumatic and premature demise just days before Christmas.

The pharmaceutical industry in this nation is KILLING PEOPLE for profit in my personal opinion as a patient and as the the sole surviving member of my family of birth. I lost both my parents prematurely, my father as noted above and my mother to outright medical malpractice during a short term recovery period in a nursing home following surgery, during which prescribed insulin was mismanaged; she had never been ON insulin prior to entering this nursing home! My young brother committed suicide in the aftermath of being taken off Prozak cold turkey, and that’s all I want to say about that.

Antidepressants are over-prescribed and under followed-up by doctors and should ONLY be prescribed by PSYCHIATRISTS and Advanced Practice (Masters Degree MINIMUM) Nurses and Medical Assistants/Nurse Prescribers..and then only as the very, very last possible resort after every other possible herb, exercise, and even surgery has failed.

I could go on for hours about this issue, but I wrote to say I will be trying the baking soda pH correction program as outlined in another of your articles as a preventive measure for my (so far benign) fibro-cystic breasts, along with increasing my intake of Iodine, a supplement Americans are severely …no desperately, lacking in our diets, which can be supplemented easily with Kelp or unprocessed sea salt, since other forms of iodine are difficult to find in many areas.

    Live well, everyone!

Great article – thank you. Instead of taking ‘chemicalized’ antacids, I’ve always taken a teaspoon of baking soda in half a glass of water and it works almost instantly every single time.

      Dear Dr. Tan,

I have seen that sodium bicarbonate from which is Bob’s Red Mill 100% baking soda will ship internationally. You may have to pay higher shipment costs. I also saw on some Internet sites searching “sodium bicarbonate reatail in Indonesia” selling at some of your local shps and baking centers. Someone on another forum recommended it is avaiable at this site of the Titan Baking Store:

      I hope this helps!

It doesn’t have to be by Arm and Hammer! In other countries it’s called bicarbonate of soda, baking soda or sodium of bicarbonate and is made by many different companies.

      • Thanks Englishlady,

but be careful of the source of the bicarbonate you buy….now they are making it from the by-products of mercury coal plants that they clean……look for some gotten from Trona Ore, which is a natural mine in the ground…and make sure your package states it is 100% sodium bicarbonate …..these have no aluminum added. We know Arm & Hammer comes from Trona ores and is 100% bicarbonate.
I wouldn’t trust using this bicarbonate would you?

Coal fired plants emit mercury, which they don’t mention in this press release.
However here in a different release they do mention the mercury being scrubbed first……but I just wouldn’t trust this and many more of these kinds of plants will be built, I’m sure.
        Excerpt below from:
Skyonic’s plan to commercialize Skymine, a process that scrubs SOX, NO2, mercury, and other heavy metals from industrial plant exhaust and converts leftover CO2 into sodium bicarbonate, was just a glimmer in the company’s eye as recently as February. But this week Skyonic announced that it is opening a carbon mineralization demonstration facility at San Antonio-based Capitol Aggregates, one of the biggest cement plants in Texas. The plant comes courtesy of a $3 million DOE grant that also requires Skyonic to produce qualifying samples of its baking soda-like CO2 byproducts, which can be turned into animal feed, glass products, and even a growth catalyst for bioalgae.
“We do a full scrub of acid gases as well as mercury scrubbing. Then we have the CO2 capture piece and we also make byproduct chemicals with lower energy than traditional methods,” explains Joe Jones, Skyonic’s founder and CEO.
Mercury continues to be a huge problem for us and our health…..and please be careful of what you are purchasing ..we are trying to keep track of the natural sources for bicarbonate of soda and this is not one. As time goes on we will have to be more and more careful of what we are getting and from where.

How to make a Safe Laundry Detergent
    1 lb of Baking Soda
1 lb of 20 Mule Team Borax
3 bars of Fels Naptha Soap Grated
    1/2 lb of Epsom salts

Mix together and just use 1/4 a cup for colored clothes, if you want to put a drop of peppermint oil, just one drop it will give it a great scent.

For whites you can add 4 ounces of Hydrogen Peroxide and it keeps the whites whiter than you have ever seen them.

      • Sargon Surit

20 Mule Team Borax is washing soda. She said it right, baking soda.

      Dear Connor,

Dr. Sircus adds many videos to his essays, please see some of his other blog entries. He also has a channel on YouTube where his videos for treatment related issues (such as use of magnesium and iodine) are posted.

Dr. Sircus will also be coming shortly with a new video book on his basic protocol and how to adapt it to personal use.

      Thank you for your comment!

  • i’m generally wandering on the net virtually all of the time which means I usually tend to peruse substantially, which unfortunately isn’t normally a beneficial factor as a large amount of the internet sites I find are constructed of pointless garbage copied from some other web pages a million times, nevertheless I gotta say this blog is in reality decent and even has a bit of original information, so kudos for breaking the pattern of simply just copying other peoples’ websites 🙂

  • Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found this for him smile. So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!

What happens to the “sodium” in sodium bicarbonate in the body? Does this extra sodium cause harm? A high sodium diet is always frowned on by the medical establishment. Can you comment on this? Also, what of the other bicarbs – potassium bi-carb for instance – are these also good for health?

  • yes

how much baking can or should an adult an or child consume? and we a person start consuming this on a regular basis as a preventative or not? does consuming epsom salts also help with this situation.
