Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis

Published on February 3, 2012

Fungal or Bacterial?

There is little hope for patients found to have a virulent strain of “totally drug-resistant tuberculosis” lung disease, doctors say, and that is because they have no idea what to use in the post-antibiotic era where drug-resistant infections rule the day. And that is because doctors are blind when faced with fungal instead of bacterial infections and have no idea how to treat fungus effectively.

Tuberculosis is an airborne disease that is mainly transmitted through close personal contact. Tuberculosis is the top single infectious killer of adults worldwide, and it lies dormant in one out of every three people, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Of those, 10 percent will develop active TB, and about two million people will die from it every year.

Over one million people worldwide are misdiagnosed with tuberculosis when in reality they have an incurable disease with a similar outlook to many cancers, says a recent report published in 2011 in the Bulletin of the WHO.[1] The disease called “chronic pulmonary aspergillosis” (CPA) is a fungal infection not a bacterial infection. Is this incurable, totally drug-resistant TB infection fungal or bacterial? It looks very much like, or is identical to, TB when doctors look at it on a chest X-ray and it has very similar symptoms initially. Doctors mistake it for TB and prescribe antibiotics as standard practice.

Because the X-ray features and symptoms are so similar to bacterial tuberculosis, doctors fail to recognize it, resulting in many unnecessary fatalities. – World Health Organization

Fifty percent of all patients who develop pulmonary aspergillosis are unlikely to survive for more than five years, a similar outlook to many cancers. Deaths from fungal infections are a little like death from vaccines, invisible and off the radar from most of the medical establishment. Yet as high as 40 percent of cancers are provoked by infections, and even though in most late-stage cancers, the infection is fungal the medical profession considers it heresy to say cancer and fungus in the same breath.

“Doctors often misdiagnose CPA and prescribe the wrong treatment, which leads to tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths,” researchers from University of Manchester and University of Toronto say in the report. CPA evades the immune system in the lungs and may lie undetected for years until symptoms such as weight loss, tiredness, coughing and bleeding develop. Yet, by the time these symptoms emerge, it is often too late to treat the disease successfully, according to the report.

“TB is a major scourge worldwide, and to find that over a third of a million people each year then develop an incurable and ultimately fatal fungal complication—which could be diagnosed and treated—demands action,” Professor Ian Jacobs, Director of MAHSC, a partnership between the NHS in Manchester and the University of Manchester, said in the report.

The Indian hospital that saw the initial cases tested a dozen medicines and none of them worked. “It is concerning,” said Dr. Kenneth Castro, director of the CDC’s Division of Tuberculosis Elimination. “Anytime we see something like this, we better get on top of it before it becomes a more widespread problem.” None of them worked, probably because what they were faced with was fungal, not bacterial, so obviously antibiotics would not work.

What doctors say is tuberculosis today infects or has infected one-third of the population of the world and new infections occur roughly one every second! Precisely because TB is such a common infection doctors have to cope with huge numbers of patients, particularly in the developing world. There is a well-established routine once doctors see a typical chest X-ray—give antibiotics without providing any kind of differential diagnosis to ascertain whether the infection is bacterial or fungal.

Ordinary TB is usually cured by taking antibiotics for six to nine months. However, if that treatment is interrupted or the dose is cut down, the stubborn bacteria battle back and mutate into a tougher strain that can no longer be killed by drugs. The problem is that from stubborn bacterial infections, even more “stubborn” fungal infections develop and these are not recognized or treated. The Associated Press reported on a case of a Peruvian teenager who was infected at home but diagnosed while visiting Florida. He was successfully treated for a year and a half with experimental high doses of medicines not typically used for TB, costing about $500,000.

Tuberculosis (TB – short for tubercle bacillus) has a long and terrible history as mankind has fought it for hundreds if not thousands of years. Before the advent of antibiotics it killed millions of people and animals when it was commonly referred to as “consumption.” Two hundred years ago it accounted for one in four of all deaths in England, but by the 1980s that had fallen to 5,000 deaths per year.

Antibiotics make the entire situation with the yeasts and fungi much worse. Fungal overgrowth occurs because its natural competitors have been removed, which easily becomes the case with antibiotic usage.

It may be some time before we really enter the predicted “post antibiotic era” in which common infections are frequently untreatable. – Dr. Marc Lipsitch – Harvard School of Public Health

Many of the unstoppable infections and deaths are not caused by the pathogens but by the drugs doctors prescribe. Antibiotics and antiviral medications are dangerous and compromise body physiology in predictable ways. Likewise the increasing numbers of allergic and adverse reactions to medications arise directly as a result of the toxic shock not only from the medicines themselves but from a long list of other compromising agents like food preservatives, residue pesticides, artificial sweeteners, MSG, impure water compromised with fluoride and chlorine, and the list goes on and on.

Extremely drug-resistant (XXDR) TB according to Dr. David Ashkin, one of the nation’s leading experts on tuberculosis is in humanities future. “This is the new class that people are not really talking too much about. These are the ones we really fear because I’m not sure how we treat them.”

Today, all the leading killer infectious diseases on the planet—TB, malaria and HIV among them—are mutating at an alarming rate because of the overuse and misuse of the very drugs that were supposed to save us. “Drug-resistant TB is a ‘time bomb,’ a manmade problem that is costly, deadly, debilitating, and the biggest threat to our current TB control strategies,” said Dr. Masae Kawamura, who heads the Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center in San Francisco.

Medical scientists at Arizona State University say that antibiotic use is known to almost completely inhibit excretion of mercury in rats due to alteration of gut flora.[2] Once established, sub-clinical colonization with yeast in the body may persist unrecognized for many years. Antibiotics such as tetracycline can greatly increase yeast in the colon after only a few days.

Dr. Elmer Cranton says that, “Yeast overgrowth is partly iatrogenic (caused by the medical profession) and can be caused by antibiotics.”

Fungi (e.g. Aspergillus fumigatus) are not affected by antibiotics and neither are viruses. If not given correct treatment (antifungal medication) the prognosis is that 50% of those infected will die inside five years. In fact the overuse of antibiotics leads to fungal infections. Allopathic doctors practicing pharmaceutical medicine are a lost cause now that the world of pathogens is rebelling against what they have been doing with antibiotics these past decades.

When fungi become systemic from gut inflammation and the overuse of antibiotics, you can see how the whole body—again, the eyes, liver, gallbladder, muscles and joints, kidneys, and skin—becomes involved in inflammatory bowel disease. – Dr. Dave Holland

Are you ready for a world without antibiotics?” runs the headline in the British Guardian. “Antibiotics are the bedrock of modern medicine. But in the very near future, we’re going to have to learn to live without them once again. And it’s going to get nasty. The era of antibiotics is coming to a close. In just a couple of generations, what once appeared to be miracle medicines have been beaten into ineffectiveness by the bacteria they were designed to knock out. Once, scientists hailed the end of infectious diseases. Now, the post-antibiotic apocalypse is within sight.”

According to several studies, obstetricians and gynecologists write 2,645,000 antibiotic prescriptions every week. Internists prescribe 1,416,000 per week. This works out to 211,172,000 prescriptions annually in the United States, just for these two specialties. Pediatricians prescribe over $500 million worth of antibiotics annually just for one condition, ear infections. Yet topical povidone iodine (PVP-I) is as effective as topical ciprofloxacin, with a superior advantage of having no in vitro drug resistance and the added benefit of reduced cost of treatment.[3]

Natural Allopathic Medicine

One must wonder here why they have not tried nebulized sodium bicarbonate, which, when combined with glutathione, offers one of the finest, safest and least expensive ways of treating the lungs. And iodine, that nutritional mineral medicine used for over 150 years, also when nebulized, offers anti-pathogen firepower without equal because it has the ability to take down viruses, bacteria and stubborn fungi.

Though it kills 90 percent of bacteria on the skin within 90 seconds, the use of iodine as an antibiotic has been tragically ignored. Iodine exhibits activity against bacteria, molds, yeasts, protozoa, and many viruses; indeed, of all antiseptic preparations suitable for direct use on humans and animals and upon tissues, only iodine is capable of killing all classes of pathogens: gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, mycobacteria, yeasts, and protozoa. Most bacteria are killed within 15 to 30 seconds of contact.

Iodine is by far the best antibiotic, antiviral and antiseptic of all time. – Dr. David Derry

No doubt these doctors have no idea that treatments with high oral dosages of iodine, and even the nebulization of magnesium chloride, will also have a strong effect against pathogens while tuning up the entire system, including stimulating immune function. For 500,000 dollars, using these three emergency room and intensive care medicines: magnesium chloride, transdermally applied and/or nebulized, sodium bicarbonate nebulized with glutathione or orally taken, and iodine used orally and/or nebulized (nascent only for nebulization), they could treat a thousand people!

DR Sircus,, Sugar as a healer Up until recently i would put honey on my cuts as a healer but i recently got a job in a milk powder co in nz and was working on a lactose auger and cut my hand while putting the auger back in,, it was very pain full, my hands were in the lactose powder ,, the pain was gone in about 30 seconds the bleed ing stooped in another 30 seconds and the cuts healed up in only a couple of day’s (i am a diabetic and don’t heal up quickly at all ) lactose works faster than honey and stops the pain as well ,,, i have been using sugar as carbon additive in my gardening prior to my discovery of the lactose ,, it seams the depletion of carbon out of our soils by the continued use of the wrong fertilizes stops the magnesium etc from being in our vegetables.. Sugar has six parts carbon twenty-two parts hydrogen and six parts oxygen where lactose has twice the carbon as sugar same hydrogen and same oxygen.. i believe that lactose needs to be included in to your protocol as a topographical healer and so cheep

  • Claudine Lefrancois

    Dr. Sircus,
My question concerns my daughter who is 19 1/2 years old.
She was diagnosed in January 2010 with IBS and later on with Ulcerative colitis.
She went from 145lb to about 90lb now.
Symptoms are severe nausea, diarrhea many times per hour even during the night- with and without blood, low iron, high red blood cell count (685), heart beats from lowest at 110 to 185 per minute, anemic, etc.
Also, a fact that has been wrongfully ignored by her doctors in my opinion, is that she has had her periods only 2 in the last year. Each time not lasting a full day. In addition, she has been complaining of extremely painful ovary pain one side. Ultrasound revealed polycystic right ovary. No treatment were recommended.

All drugs including Melasamine, steroids, etc have failed to stop the diarrhea (with blood) and nausea.

In reading your material, I was wondering if the magnesium chloride and sodium bicarbonate or something else would help her.
Have you ever treated someone with her symptoms?

If so, I would welcome a conversation with you.

      Dear Claudine,

Dr. Sircus has many recommendations for people with the problems you describe and they include using magnesium chloride transdermally (bypassing the gut so no diarrhea), sodium bicarbonate and probiotics which are also very important and can help stop the diarrhea.

  • I was diagnosed with Mycobacterium Avium Infection. It is resistant to most antibiotics except for Clarithromycin…which I am looking at it as a blessing. I am intolerant to most of these antibiotics that they use to treat this. I have been taking silvercillin and natural supplements. I have greatly improved but still experiment some symptoms. I still believe there is something out there that can kick this things but naturally. I read about nebulizing the iodine. Can you please provide me with some more information and would it be possible for me to be seen by you…Dr Sircus? THey are referring me to the Jewish Hospital but I don’t want these antibiotics…I want natural healing…help…I am 41 years young and have a 9 year old son I want to do things with and sometimes I am tired and SOB. I would like to release this mycobacterium from my body and then be a testimony of how others can be helped without the brutal side effects and illnesses with the antibiotics!!! tHanks for your attention to this matter!

Do any of the ebooks written by Dr. Sircus contain specific instructions on how to nebulize these substances including amounts, or nebulizer recommendations ? Thank You.

    • Claudia – IMVA Staff

Dr. Sircus does not specify amounts in any of his books…this is because you can’t give a pat answer that everyone will follow. Sometimes it depends on what is being treated, history, age, weight, other medicines or supplements people are taking and a variety of other things. He likes to speak with his clients before recommending specific dosages. In general you should start out with any of the substances on his protocol by using only a drop in the nebulizer mixed with water and observe for any untoward reactions….then doses can be increased.

We do not recommend any specific nebulizer…there are may available on the internet of every type….some are portable and some not. You should get one that has a medicine chamber that will hold at least 5 ml of a pure water mixed with the medication you will be nebulizing.

  • Tim

M Schultz should follow the implicit argument, and note that Dr Sircus says that iodine kills all pathogens including, presumably, the newer drug resistant types of mycobacteria. As I understand it, iodine binds exposed tyrosine residues, thereby denaturing the fungal surface proteins and interfering with their ability to bind to the cells in the lung and elsewhere. As such, it cannot be defended against by a pathogen.
He doesn’t really spell it out, but the history of medical science has been far more about improving people’s sanitation and food supply than about discovering wonderful new medications. As there is lots of money via the patenting laws in doing this, we have been hoodwinked into thinking that this is the only way we can stay well and healthy.
Gilgamesh hasn’t really understood that governmernts and pharmaceutical corporations are not in business to do the right thing, and to keep people healthy, but to do the profitable thing, even if their “solutions” are very short-term and ultimately counter-productive. Putting people on drugs for the rest of their lives is the business model. It brings profit for the executives and shareholders and tax revenue for the government whilst simultaneously destroying or otherwise compromising the subjects’ health.
His comments about Ron Paul’s economic ideas are valid. Dr Paul should realise that the world’s gold has been long since repossessed by the Rothschilds as collateral for the unrepaid “loans” which they have made to the US and everybody else. The US went bankrupt in 1933, so US policy since then has been run by these same bankers, hence all the wars and the devastation which is still being visited on nations unable to defend themselves, whose only crime is to be sitting on top of oil reserves. As the Rothschilds owns all the gold, then they will obviously control any currency which is based on it, so we will not be emerging any time soon from the present economic insanity if we follow Ron’s rather curious fiscal notions. His other ideas are laudable, but the economic model is his Achilles’ Heel.
Mr McGean has some good ideas, notably about the efficacy of sunshine against TB; which is clearly via the production of vitamin D, which acts directly on the DNA to upregulate the innate immune response and the subsequent translation of the so-called cathelicidins and anti-microbial peptides, of which there are thousands, with a whole host of target pathogens.

  • M Schultz

I am confused. You begin your essay about a new drug resistant TB strain and then in the middle of the essay you talk about Natural Allopathic Medicine and nebulized medications without linking the two. Are you suggesting that these nebulized medication will cure this new form of TB?

    • Claudia – IMVA Staff

      Dear M Schultz,

In this essay Dr. Sircus is pointing out that perhaps the use of simpler and more basic substances could help to prevent some of the problems that we are seeing arise today, such as this drug resistant TB, and the chronic fungal conditions that go missed by many physicians. Antibiotics are not working, people quickly become resistant to antifungals….the fungus adapt and develope a rapid resistance to these drugs. But still iodine stands out as being able to overtake fungi, bacteria and viruses if given in the proper doses and without the adverse effects of most of today’s pharmaceutical drugs. Same with magnesium and sodium bicarb so they could and should be tried as a means of overcoming these horrid infections. Do you think that anyone would cover the studies necessary to prove this????? Fat chance…there’s not a lot of profit in it for the pharmaceutical giants.

  • Gilgamesh

I never used iodine before , but I just bought one bottle of IOSOL, one ounce bottle for 12 dollars, on the bottle it say that is the strongest iodine could be sold on the market, and it is water soluble, will not build up in the liver, and in the organs.I put one and a half drops in my coffee in the morning, and at night.I also bought one bottle of Wild Oregano Oil,and one bottle of MMS, and one pound of baking soda, and 16 ounces of magnesium oil.But so far i only used the IOSOL iodine.
I dont know why anyone would pay 500 hundred thousand dollars for antibiotics of any kind, I think that is a scam, like most of the expansive drugs on the market.
I think the Government should do something about this, maybe change the patent laws about all drugs, and GMO foods, and educate the doctors to prescribe none toxic medicines that work and really cure people, instead of putting people on drugs for the rest of their life.
But I guess the politicians are not doctors, and they know nothing about medicines
only DR Ron Paul is a doctor, maybe he would know something about medicines, but he knows nothing about everything else. I watched his talk on TV, and he was talking about changing all the paper money for Gold money. All the gold they mined in the past 10 000 years, is less than 160 000 tons, and part of that is in industry, and part of it lost in the oceans, and maybe all the gold that would be available for coin money would be about 40-50 000 tons in all the countries in the WORLD.And one ton of gold would make 32000 one ounce gold coins. So all the gold in the World would only make one and a half billion gold coins, but the World population now is over 7 billion , and growing about one million every week. The World would be in bankruptcy in the first 24 minutes, if Ron Paul would go ahead with his gold plan. In my opinion the fiat money built civilizations, built up Europe after the war, and worked for the last hundred years, and any money crisis now is all manufactured by the governments and the banks.

  • Mark excellent article, but I found it curious that sunlight was not in your list of things one can do to fight either bacterial or fungal lung issues. I am 65 and remember playing baseball next to the Children’s hospital with its flint glass solarium on the fifth floor.
Bacteria and fungus dislike Sunlight when seen by pituitary and pineal glands of our biology, wakened so far that one bit of spittle can eat our lungs and kill us.
Iodine can not repair the cells, oxygen can and sulfur transports that oxygen then takes out the trash even of the damaged cells.
Pub Med in numerous articles say as we have observed, sulfur can protect and repair the damage of radiation exposure and the irresponsibility of TB. Its all about the terrain. Even with the Plague, someone had to be healthy enough to carry out the dead.
We have no study members still on oxygen, some of 25 years, could it be cellular regeneration?

Best to you who lives by moving waters.

    Got sulfur

    • OliveOyl

Thanks to Patrick, the Director of the Cellular Matrix Project, for mentioning sulfur. I also agree that sunlight is a great gift to our immune systems (and at no cost). There was a Danish study reported in 2009 which demonstrated that “vitamin D triggers and arms the immune system” (that exact phrase can be googled to find articles about the study).

Dr. Sircus has mentioned vitamin D many times on this site. One of his tips was that adequate magnesium levels can help us to maintain good levels of vitamin D.

It is worth adding that people who exclude refined carbohydrates (sugar and starch) from their diets have an internal terrain that shuns pathogenic microorganisms — low normal blood glucose levels and a healthily alkaline pH. Dr. Sircus’ magnesium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and iodine, as well as Patrick’s sulfur, will support that alkaline state in addition to all their other benefits.

Fairly often the mainstream media hypes the dangers of drug-resistant bugs and makes the public feel they have no choice but to be sitting ducks for infection. NOT! I wish that I could send every reader to the IMVA website.

    • Claudia – IMVA Staff

      Hi Patrick,

Thanks for pointing out our error of omission on this essay. Absolutely sunlight is crucial to our health and it is on Dr. Sircus’ protocol.

There’s a new article posted today by The Vitamin D Council….in the article it states :

Vitamin D is fairly safe although it is oil-soluble. The top tolerable level is believed to be 10,000 IUs per day. Fifteen minutes of exposure to the sun at the hottest hours of the day can lead to the formation of more than 10,000 IUs of vitamin D, which is sufficient for a day.

Vitamin D is produced when the skin is exposed to the sun or sunshine. Only a few foods can provide natural vitamin D and they are cold water oily fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, eggs, and mushroom, which is actually a source of vitamin D2.

Some foods are fortified with vitamin D including cereals, cow’s milk, soy milk, and orange juice. Experts say that the amount of vitamin D in fortified foods is not sufficient. For instance, some suggest that one needs to drink 20 glasses of milk to get sufficient amounts of vitamin D.
