Are You Taking Your Iodine?

Published on October 26, 2016

Are you taking your iodine? Everyone should be supplementing with iodine but if you live on the west coast of the United States, Canada or Mexico you better be taking your iodine and your children should be taking their iodine because:

Thanks to the environmental disaster that was Fukushima and the incredibly long half-life of iodine-129, the Pacific coast may never be the same again. It will take about 16 million years for the contamination from the tremendous nuclear accident to dissipate.

While a vast array of radioactive isotopes were released into the environment during the Fukushima meltdown, iodine-129 is a particularly concerning material, due to its incredibly long half-life. This means that basically any food that comes from the North American western coast will likely be contaminated with radiation for innumerable generations to come. Radiation in the oceans will inevitably enter our water supply, and consequently our food supply as well. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), iodine from the ocean enters the air as sea spray or iodine gas. Once in the air, iodine can then combine with water particles and enter surface water and soil once the particles fall to ground. Iodine can remain in the soil for extremely long periods of time, because it can combine with organic material easily. Plants and vegetation that grow in this soil also have the potential to absorb the iodine.

People who have low iodine levels are more likely to get thyroid cancer than those who do not. Low iodine levels also cause goiter (an enlarged thyroid) and this increases the chance of developing thyroid cancer. When faced with a radioactive cloud, as is everyone in the northern hemisphere thanks to Fukushima, it is absolutely imperative that we take iodine, whatever iodine you can get your hands on. If the only iodine available is topical iodine that is not suitable for oral use then you should paint your body and your children’s bodies with it.

Dr. Brownstein writes, “If there is enough inorganic, non-radioactive iodine in our bodies, the radioactive fallout has nowhere to bind in our bodies. It will pass through us, leaving our bodies unharmed. It is important to ensure that we have adequate iodine levels before this fallout hits.”

Dr. Michael B. Schachter says, “The treatment dose when a person is iodine insufficient is generally between 12.5 mg and 50 mg daily. Preliminary research indicates that if a person is iodine insufficient, it takes about three months to become iodine sufficient while ingesting a dosage of 50 mg of iodine daily and a year to achieve that while ingesting a dosage of 12.5 mg of iodine daily.

Women with a history of low iodine levels (hypothyroidism) face a significantly higher risk of developing liver cancer. Researchers led by Manal Hassan of Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas concluded that this finding suggested a clinical association between hypothyroidism and hepatitis C, which is contributing to the country’s rising rate of liver cancer.

“At 6 grams daily (which is 6 million micrograms/day or 6,000 milligrams/day!), a much higher dose, iodine has been used to cure syphilis, skin lesions, and chronic lung disease,” says Dr. Gabriel Cousens. “From a larger physiological perspective, it is important to realize that the thyroid is only one gland of many glands and tissues that needs iodine. Other glands/organs/systems with high iodine uptake are the breasts, ovaries, cervix, blood, lymph, bones, gastric mucosal, salivary, adrenal, prostate, colon, thymus, lungs, bladder, kidney, and skin. Iodine is found and used in every hormonal receptor in the body,” he states.

No one recommends that much iodine today but it is good to understand iodine so one is not afraid to take as much as one needs. Iodine prevents cancer especially in the breasts, ovaries and prostate gland. It is also extremely important in the age of antibiotic resistant infections for it kills viruses, bacteria and fungi.

Breast tissue contains the body’s third highest concentrations of this essential mineral, so shortfalls in iodine needs have a highly negative impact on breast tissue. Iodine shortfalls coupled with bromine and other toxic halogens cause fibrocystic breast disease and breast cancer.

It is unbelievable that doctors nor the government recommends enough iodine to protect people from the harm that comes from not taking iodine. Makes me believe that most doctors have no idea how to practice medicine—not real medicine that helps more than it hurts. The iodine in salt is enough only to prevent goiter but nothing else.

  • Debi Pomeroy

How do I know which idodine to take? Do I take it orally as in a liquid form or a pill form?

  • Rene

I used Nascents 5 yrs ago and I love the extra surge of energy. I used it before I worked out.

  • Coy Coleman

Lugols is extremely harsh and can burn the mouth when taken alone. I have been using an eye dropper to take this in my favorite drinks and I do not taste it at all. Recently I have ordered Nascent and will see if the taste factor is any better.

  • Chris Millman

I generally support all your health views Dr. Sircus except in the case of MMS, which I have successfully & extensively tried to the point I can safely say it’s NOT glorified bleach 😉

    • adam

MMS (chlorine dioxide CLo2) Only treats the symptom of disease but NOT the cause of pathology. It helps with the symptom of digestion but not the cause. Pathology goes to chemicals accumulated. Oxygen doesn’t deal with chemicals (cause)

Dr. Sircus, My scientist friend makes radiation detectors and he is not detecting radiation coming from Fukushima in the Pacific Ocean! (Still Dr. Brownstein says seaweed is now loaded with arsenic and thus seaweed is no longer a good food source for iodine.) What we believe is killing the fish, whales and sea life is the government is dumping 200 thousand tons of iron in the ocean creating dead zones. They are doing this to cause phytoplankton that contain carbon to drop to the bottom of the sea floor. However they don’t know if this will reduce carbon in the atmosphere at all or how long dead phytoplankton to stay on the sea floor (days to weeks, maybe a month?). What they do know is this practice is causing cause dead zones void of oxygen that is killing fish and sea life and allowing for deadly bacteria to get in the gills of fish. We believe it is the dumping of the iron and then HAARP frequencies that is causing the massive Pacific Ocean die off of all sea life.

Oct 18, 2012 … Why dump this dirty brown powder into the ocean and why to trigger a plankton bloom?
Unbeknownst to most scientists until a few days ago, two hundred thousand pounds of iron sulphate were dumped into North Pacific Ocean in July, with the aim to trigger a large plankton bloom. This experiment was conducted by the Haida Salmon Restoration Corporation, under the direction of businessman Russ George. Why dump this dirty brown powder into the ocean and why to trigger a plankton bloom?

Phytoplankton is photosynthetic, needing sunlight and nutrients to grow, taking up carbon dioxide in the process and producing oxygen as a by-product. This phytoplankton then dies, falling to the bottom of the ocean, and taking that ‘sequestered’ carbon dioxide with it, trapping it at the bottom of the ocean. (So they are KILLING THE FISH AND THE FOOD THE FISH AND WHALES EAT).

Dr. Flecha, MD, said that Nobel Prize Winner, Dr. Albert Syent Gyorgi collaborated the research by governments around the world that studied the health benefits of different amounts of iodine on their people as it is known the health of the thyroid is key to longevity. However, iodine is also needed by every cell in the body and all fibroids, nodules, cysts, lypomas and enlargement in body are known to be iodine deficiencies (as per reported by Dr. Flecha, MD),. The Japanese average 13.8 mg per day which is 100 times more than the (I belive pathetic 150 mcg of our US RDA). While Dr. Gyorgi, MD reported the optimum amount was 62 mg per day (400 times the US RDA), he personally took 1,000 mg a day and lived to the age of 93. Given the water in the US is often full of fluoride and chlorine and our strawberries to our beds and couches are full of bromine and bromides – all of which block iodine – it is critical we get enough iodine.
Dr. Jeffrey Dach, MD says to take it with 200 mcg of selenium so that one does not experience Hachimoto like side-effects from taking iodine. It is also good when starting on iodine to start slowly as it detoxes heavy metals and bromide out of the body. Some recommend to take it with Himilayan salt to flush the bromide out of the body. If you suffer from fibroids of the uterus, breast or ovarian cysts, be sure to consider the body’s need for iodine for such.

    • Angela Ashley

Dr. How do I take it?

  • Mark Sircus

Actually it is a mistake of mine to say just the west coast the radiation has gotten everywhere

    • ani

If the radiation has gotten anywhere, the iodine we are taking is also with radiation, no?

      • Mark Sircus

Perhaps with kelp but not with Nascent or Lugols

        • ani

I already heard about radioactive iodine. How does it work that iodine is indifferent to radiation and kelp not?

          • Mark Sircus

Because metalic iodine used in products come from underground
