The Miracle of Molecular Hydrogen

Scientific researchers tell us, “Hydrogen is extremely unique since it has the capability to act at the cellular level. Hydrogen is qualified to cross the blood brain barrier, to enter the mitochondria, and even has the ability to translocate to the nucleus under certain conditions. Once in these ideal locations of the cell, previous studies have shown that hydrogen exerts antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties that are beneficial to the cell.”[1]

In terms of medicine small is good, as Nano science has tended to show. In the case of hydrogen, we are talking about the ultimate in smallness proving to be the biggest medical breakthrough of the 21st century. Hydrogen appears in the top left corner of the periodic table, and is denoted as number one. Hydrogen is the smallest, simplest, and most fundamental element with molecular hydrogen (H2) the smallest molecule.

Interestingly, water, which is essential to life, is formed by the combination of oxygen (a powerful oxidizer) and hydrogen (a powerful reducer). It tends to make sense that molecular hydrogen has high-powered therapeutic potential as does water itself. Hydrogen is a novel and innovative therapeutic tool and can be used like intravenous vitamin C therapy except it is vastly less expensive, and can be used every day around the clock—with every sip of water.

Each drink of hydrogen water will flush our bodies with trillions of hydrogen molecules. H2 is an effective molecule to scavenger or pair up with toxic hydroxyl radicals in the body that need to be neutralized. Hydrogen therapy is safe as there is no upper limit of use. The more water you drink infused with hydrogen the better, especially if you have late stage cancer and need to turn things around quickly.

There is no toxicity to H2 because the byproduct of the free-radical neutralizing reaction is water. Each molecule of H2 will neutralize 2 hydroxyl radicals into two molecules of H2O hydrating your cells in the process. Hydrogen water at a concentration of 1.6 mg/L would have more “antioxidant” molecules than 100 mg of vitamin C, as there are more total molecules in 1.6 mg of hydrogen compared 100 mg of vitamin C.

The hydrogen product market is evolving rapidly. Originally, at the end of 2015 I wrote that one can have 2 ppm (2.0 mg/L) of hydrogen infused water by dropping an Active H2 tablet in a ½ liter bottle of water. Meghydrate is another hydrogen product that has very broad applicability and contains an abundance of negative hydrogen ions within a colloidal silica matrix. Now I have switched and am recommending only Vital Reaction, which is putting out much higher levels of hydrogen, and for intensive care situations inhaled hydrogen.

Molecular hydrogen is a medical leap that is going to help many people. It elevates oral medicine to the level of intravenous medicine because of the ultra-quick absorption and dispersion deep into the cells. Now water can become the ultimate medicine especially if some of some of my other health solutions (magnesium, bicarbonate, iodine and liquid selenium) are used, when appropriate.

Medical/therapeutic water high in hydrogen will ride to the rescue of doctors and patients who are battling with chronic diseases. Studies have confirmed that consumption of hydrogen reduces oxidative stress in a diverse range of disorders and organ systems including the digestive, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. There are hundreds of scientific publications that show molecular hydrogen to be therapeutic. Even NASA is researching hydrogen water to protect their astronauts from radiation during space travel.

Hydrogen is intriguing. As explained by Tyler LeBaron, founder of the Molecular Hydrogen Foundation, hydrogen powers the sun’s fusion, it is key to ATP production within the mitochondria, and it is the father of all other elements. Hydrogen, along with oxygen, has been intrinsically involved with evolution of life in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes (e.g. hydrogenases, hydrogenosomes, mitochondria, etc.). The extremes of oxygen and hydrogen provide balance between oxidation and reduction, which is vital to life. The most important and basic thing to know about molecular hydrogen is that it negates the toxicity of oxygen.

Hydrogen in the body is mostly bound to carbon, oxygen and nitrogen. It is part of almost every molecule in your body: DNA, proteins, sugars, fats. The hydrogen bond – which forms between atoms that “share” a hydrogen atom, is one of the most important interactions that makes biological molecules behave as they do. Thus, hydrogen is an important factor in the regulation of physiology.

Molecular Hydrogen is an ideal antioxidant molecule for oxidative stress in the mitochondria due to its small size. It is one of the very few, if not only antioxidant molecules that can reach the inside of the mitochondria. H2 directly protects mitochondria that are exposed to reactive oxygen species. Preliminary clinical trials show that drinking hydrogen-dissolved water seems to improve the pathology of mitochondrial disorders. Drinking H2-water stimulates energy metabolism as measured by O2 consumption and CO2 production.

This is what I would call the ultimate testimony from a doctor about what you can expect if we start supplementing with the hydrogen.

Antioxidants and Cancer

According to the National Cancer Institute considerable laboratory, evidence from chemical, cell culture, and animal studies indicates that antioxidants may slow or possibly prevent the development of cancer. Antioxidants are nutrients (vitamins and minerals) as well as enzymes (proteins in your body that assist in chemical reactions). They are believed to play a role in preventing the development of such chronic diseases as cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, and cataracts.

Acute oxidative stress induced by ischemia-reperfusion or inflammation causes serious damage to tissues, and persistent oxidative stress is accepted as one of the causes of many common diseases including cancer. H2 selectively reduces the hydroxyl radical, the most cytotoxic of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and effectively protected cells; however, H2 does not react with other ROS, which possess physiological roles. The inhalation of H2 gas markedly suppressed brain injury by buffering the effects of oxidative stress. Thus, H2 can be used as an effective antioxidant therapy; owing to its ability to rapidly diffuse across membranes, it can reach and react with cytotoxic ROS and thus protect against oxidative damage.[2]

ROS are involved in metastatic processes including invasion of cancer cells into surrounding primary tumor sites. Generated ROS regulates tumor progression, indicating that ROS is situated upstream in many signaling pathways including the pathway involved in metastasis. At tumor sites, large amount of ROS are produced by activated neutrophils and macrophages in the inflammatory response.

Hydrogen water erases ROS indispensable for tumor cell growth. Scientists who have studied its antitumor effects used hydrogen in combination with hyperthermia at 42°C and found it to be potent as an anti-tumor agent.[3] Therapeutic opportunities of hydrogen increases in the presence of specific catalysts or heat thus for cancer and other serious diseases it should be used in the context of a full protocol.

Water Ionizers Produce Hydrogen Water

It is very revealing that it is not the high pH alkaline water that provides health benefits but the molecular hydrogen – but only if the ionizer electrodes are brand new or perfectly free of scale and you drink the water right away.

The Molecular Hydrogen Foundation says, “The hydrogen gas concentration from water ionizers various significantly from less than 0.05 ppm to over 2.5 ppm depending on source water, flow rate, design, and cleanliness of the electrodes. Importantly alkaline water ionizers were developed decades before it was known of the therapeutic importance of molecular hydrogen, thus these units were optimized for alkaline pH not high dissolved hydrogen concentration. Typically, at normal flow and normal source water the concentration of H2 from an alkaline water ionizer is around 0.1 ppm to 0.7 ppm. By running the water very slowly, these machines may increase the molecular hydrogen concentration.”

Hydrogen, Inflammation and Pain

The cells that are repeatedly exposed to inflammatory mediators will have the genes that code for inflammatory response proteins switched on, and thus be in a constant state of inflammation. This leads to diseases and health conditions that are strongly linked to inflammation, including asthma and cardiovascular diseases. Some of the molecules in the body that can instigate a change in gene expression are: Nf-kB, TNFa, and reactive nitrogen species such as nitric oxide and peroxynitrite.

Hydrogen indirectly affects gene expression through its actions to modulate molecules that have a direct epigenetic effect, Molecular Hydrogen can:

· Impede release of NF-kB

· Reduce TNFa

· Reduce excess nitric oxide

· Scavenge peroxynitrite

Molecular hydrogen has been shown to be an anti-inflammatory in acute conditions, but it is also a potential epigenetic modifying agent for genes that code for chronic pain and inflammation.

    I would suggest that magnesium bicarbonate, or “magnesium water” does the same thing only internally and perhaps better since monatomic hydrogen (free H+ that combines w/other H+ to make H2) is created by “bicarbonates” of either sodium or magnesium when an acidic environment exists in our body. I’m an engineer with a lifelong scholarship in nutrition and not a chemist nor doctor. I did read the following that suggests as much yet would prefer as much validation as possible.

    “The bicarbonate buffering system (like all buffers) is composed of a weak acid (carbonic acid — H2CO3) and a weak base (bicarbonate – HCO3-). Together, they work to keep the pH of the blood and other internal fluids within a specific range. In solution, carbonic acid dissociates into hydrogen ions (H+ ) and bicarbonate ions (HCO3-). When acids are added to a bicarbonate buffering system, the bicarbonate ions re-associate with H+ ions and re-form carbonic acid. This reduces H+ ion concentration (acidity) and brings the pH back up. Buffers neutralize acids by scavenging hydrogen ions (H+).

    H2CO3 + H2O ↔ H+ + HCO3-

    Carbonic acid + Water ↔ H+ ion + Bicarbonate

    Bicarbonates give blood the ability to resist changes in pH.”

    Is Ionic Magnesium–a herbal product— a good source of molecular hydrogen?

      I think Magnesium Bicarbonate, “Magnesium Water”, or Sodium Bicarbonate, baking soda mixed in water and then drank, creates “the bicarbonate buffering system” within your body. I refer to it in my post just after yours. If this is true, free radicals might create acidity in our body that bicarbonates react to by releasing monatomic “free” hydrogen (H+: see chemical formula in above comment). Hope that helps raise the level of any discussion on the synergy of these two types of water. We are thinking alike Kathleen!

My thought is that magnesium water creates an internal state that helps our bodies create our own H2 at precisely the moment we need it most. This actually would mean that magnesium water is far better than H2 water yet all the super rich with “more, more, more, more, and more $$$” meanwhile are buying up all those $$$$ new machines and methods and our free market system will son perfect them all and bring down the cost soon enough (life is good!) either way I am good yet I never assume anyone will listen to me until proven otherwise.

    I understand that the Thyroid can have too much hydrogen peroxide in Hashimoto’s Thyroid Disease, so would drinking hydrogen water make that condition worse?

      I am not a chemist yet an engineer. My inexpert opinion is that since Hydrogen Peroxide is H2O2 the problem isn’t free H+ yet “free O” since H2O2 needs an additional O. Since free H+ tend to form H2’s and then these H2’s love to combine with Os, free H+ and H2 is going to diminish hydrogen peroxide accumulations. I think the effect of magnesium water is just, or more effective, in each case as I’ve posted several times above yet I am a creative thinker and not an expert. Hope we all get clearer answers to our curiosity. Keep the team spirit and of course it is a health seeking and creative spirit at that! Happy trails!

    when Hydrochloric acid is present in the stomach ?

  • The Purative tabs are one of a number of the same product. We market them as I LOVE H2. The mannitol, as discussed here, has been a problem for some and this has now been replaced with maltose. We have also designed a ‘natural’ water hydrogen enriching filter called the UltraStream, which has been tested to produce 1.1 ppm H2 in drinking water. This uses a range of US approved filtration media and a patented Japanese slow release magnesium media.

    Some problems here:

    1) The the Purative “supplement” (not really a supplement because it is a water additive) has a proprietary blend of ingredients consisting of magnesium, malic and fumaric acids, mannitol, and who knows what else. The mannitol is a real problem because it feeds the bacteria in your gut that produce LPS. If you care at all about endotoxin and its effects, you will stay away. Also, someone might want to tell them that H2 is not “elemental.” This is the wrong terminology. It is diatomic.

    2) H2 is 0.07% the density of the earths atmosphere. Unlike CO2, which will sink and absorb in water, H2 will rise and escape.

    3) In all of the studies that I have come across, the experimental design involved placing elemental magnesium in water. The assumption is that Mg + 2H2O → Mg (OH)2 + H2. One of the problems is that the water is likely to evaporate before significant quantities of H2 are produced. You can boil the water, producing a lot of steam and turn the water purple, but if you drink the resulting fluid, how much H2 are you really getting? Based on the mechanism of action (the oxidation of hydroxyl radicals in ROS), would logic dictate that a microdose bordering on homeopathy produce the results posted? I am going to interlibrary loan some of Tyler Lebaron’s sources to try see more points of view, but for now, I hold onto my skepticism.

    4) Hydrogen has three quantum number values based on the electron spin. In the case of water, we can pass direct current through it producing H2 + O. The oxygen molecule has a charge of -2 being the electron donor to H2 which has a charge of +2. By definition, H2+2 is a free radical. We see this a lot in methyl bridges and other biosynthetic reactions. In the case of magnesium, we expect the opposite, right? Magnesium is stealing the electrons from the hydrogen atoms. In the reaction Mg + H2, we expect to get H2-2. These reactions look very simple with the Born–Oppenheimer model, but when we leave theory and move to practice is not the case. We end up with a process called quantum scattering.


    Therefore, the quality control involved in insuring that only H2-2 is given, rather than H2+2, is more involved then putting a “magnesium stick” in a bottle of water and having people sip on it. (I kid you not.)


    This research is a supplement company’s dream! It give them a reason to up-charge elemental magnesium by 10,000% or more. What a deal for them!

    Hello, Dr. Sircus,

    I have heard that inhaling HOH gas has healing
    benefits. Given that HOH is made by electrolyzing H2O and therefore
    contains elemental hydrogen, would this be a good source of H2?

      H2 is the smallest element on the periodic table. It rapidly diffuses across cell membranes. Yes inhaling H2 is also very beneficial.
