Real Salt, Celtic Salt and Himalayan Salt

This is what real salt looks like—we all know what regular white salt looks like—and we mistakenly think it is real salt when it is not. The fact is that refined white salt, such as commercial table salt is bad, very bad stuff. Unrefined natural salt on the other hand is good, very good stuff providing many health benefits.

Unrefined sea salt is healthy. The blood-pressure-raising effect of table salt can be due to its high content of sodium with not enough magnesium to balance it. This has a magnesium-lowering effect that can constrict the arteries and raise blood pressure. Real salt (of various kinds) contains plenty of magnesium and other important minerals, which is why it usually does not affect blood pressure in a negative way.[1]

Sodium is an essential nutrient required by the body for maintaining levels of fluids and for providing channels for nerve signaling. Some sodium is needed in your body to regulate fluids and blood pressure, and to keep muscles and nerves running smoothly.

Without appropriate amounts of sodium, your body may have a difficult time cooling down after intense exercise or activity. When the body is hot, you sweat. If you do not have enough sodium, your body may not sweat as much and you may then become overheated. This could result in a stroke or exhaustion as well as dehydration.

Sodium is an energy carrier. It is also responsible for sending messages from the brain to muscles through the nervous system so that muscles move on command. When you want to move your arm or contract any muscle in your body, your brain sends a message to a sodium molecule that passes it to a potassium molecule and then back to a sodium molecule etc., etc., until it gets to its final destination and the muscle contracts. This is known as the sodium-potassium ion exchange. Therefore, without sodium, you would never be able to move any part of your body.

Excess sodium (such as that obtained from dietary sources) is excreted in the urine.[2] Most of the sodium in the body (about 85%) is found in blood and lymph fluid. Sodium levels in the body are partly controlled by a hormone called aldosterone, which is made by the adrenal glands. Aldosterone levels determine whether the kidneys hold sodium in the body or pass it into the urine.

Dr. David Brownstein weighs in heavily on this matter saying, “Nobody makes a distinction between unrefined and refined salt. They ‘lump’ all salt together as a bad substance. This is a terrible mistake. There are two forms of salt available in the market place: refined and unrefined. Refined salt has had its minerals removed and has been bleached to give it the white appearance that we are accustomed to seeing with salt. It is the fine, white salt that is available at almost any restaurant or grocery store. Refined salt has been bleached and exposed to many toxic chemicals in order to get it to its final product. It has aluminum, ferrocyanide, and bleach in it. I believe this refining process has made it a toxic, devitalized substance that needs to be avoided.”

“Unrefined salt, on the other hand,” Brownstein continues, “has not been put through a harsh chemical process. It contains the natural minerals that were originally part of the product. Its mineral content gives it a distinct color. The colors of unrefined salt can vary depending on where it is taken from. This is due to the changing mineral content of the various brands of salt. It is the minerals in unrefined salt that provide all the benefits of this product. The minerals supply the body with over 80 trace elements needed to maintain and sustain health. Furthermore, the minerals elevate the pH (correct acidity) and lower blood pressure. Our maker gave us salt to use in our diet—unrefined salt—with its full complement of minerals. Dr. Brownstein says, “Years ago salt manufacturers decided that pure white salt is prettier than off-white salt and that consumers prefer pretty white salt. So they started bleaching it. They also added anti-clumping agents to increase its shelf life. The problem is that the chemicals added to keep salt from absorbing moisture on the shelf interfere with one of salt’s main functions: to regulate hydration in your body. The sodium chloride in table salt is highly concentrated, denatured, and toxic to your body. Ever put salt on an open cut? It burns!!! Refined salt has the same effect on internal tissues and causes a negative reaction: your body retains water to protect itself, and your cells release water to help dilute, neutralize, and break down the salt. This loss of water dehydrates and weakens your cells and can even cause them to die prematurely. Natural sea salt is far superior to chemically-treated iodized table salts as it contains all 92 trace minerals, and it’s only 84% sodium chloride while table salt is almost 98%".

All this adds up to one thing. Table salt, whether marine or not, is toxic—it’s poisonous to the body and is responsible, in great part, to the onset of many terrible diseases including thyroid and metabolic dysfunction.

Himalayan crystal salt that is mined 5,000 feet deep below the Himalayan mountain range was subject to enormous pressure over millions of years and is over 99% pure. The higher the amount of pressure the more superior or excellent the state of order within the crystalline structure of salt. Many Himalayan salts are sold cheaply but are collected from higher up near the tops of the Himalayan Mountains instead of from the deeper mines. These salts contain more impurities, do not have the same structure and are not as easily assimilable by the body.

Himalayan salt contains 84 minerals and trace elements in ionic state and is a delightful pink color. People often state that they use less of this salt than of other types. Many sizes are available from 3 oz in a salt grinder to larger 1-kg bags (2.2 lb). Salt chunks are also available for making your own “sole,” which is a saturated solution of purified water with Himalayan salt. A specific recipe (see below) must be followed to make sole and results in a solution that has much less sodium than just adding salt to water would have. Daily use of sole is believed to stimulate the peristalsis of the digestive organs, balance the stomach acid, support the production of digestive fluids in the liver and pancreas, regulate the metabolism and harmonize the acid-alkaline balance.

Start Each Day with a Healthy Sole

The ideal way to use Himalayan Crystal Salt is in the form of a sole (so-LAY). Drinking the sole when you awake each morning is like getting up on the right side of the bed. It provides the energizing minerals you need daily to recharge your body, and it helps set the stage for a day of vitality.

Essentially, a sole is water saturated with Himalayan Crystal Salt. The sole contains about approximately 26 parts of salt to 100 parts of water. Prepare the water and salt combination in advance (see directions to the right). Each morning place a teaspoon of the sole mixture in a glass and fill with 8 ounces of pure spring water. Drink it immediately or sip it while getting dressed, checking emails or preparing breakfast. The water helps transport the electrolytes throughout the body to all the many places they are needed.

How to Prepare Sole

Sole is a mixture of water and salt. The object is to saturate the water with dissolved salt so it can’t hold anymore. You’ll know that you’ve created sole when there are undissolved salt crystals in the water. You can’t oversaturate the water with salt. The crystals will simply drop to the bottom of the container.

Place several Himalayan Crystal Salt stones or Himalayan Crystal Salt granules about an inch deep in a glass container. (A canning jar works well.)

Cover the salt with two to three inches of pure, spring water. Let the salt dissolve for 24 hours.

If all the salt dissolves in 24 hours, add more salt to the container. The sole is finished when the water can no longer dissolve the salt and the salt crystals drop to the bottom of the container. There will always be salt crystals in the jar. It doesn’t matter if you have only a few crystals or many. The water is saturated and is now sole.

Cover the container to prevent the water from evaporating. Since salt is a natural preservative, the sole will keep forever. It can’t spoil or go “bad.”

Redmond Real Salt is mined in the United States and is another good unrefined salt that I also recommend. It can be used as a table salt and for cooking and is available in coarse and fine grinds and in a variety of sizes.

Real Salt comes from a mineral rich salt deposit formed by an ancient sea in Utah. It contains 62 trace minerals, and is without additives, chemicals, or heat processing of any kind. Real Salt’s unique pinkish appearance and flecks of color come from the more than 60 naturally occurring trace minerals. The result is a delicate “sweet salt” flavor that you may not have experienced before.

Special Note: I was very disappointed to hear Dr. Max Gerson’s daughter Charlotte Gerson saying, “That sodium is never good, never in any form!” I have put Gerson in the best light in my writings and his organization does hold the high ground for organic raw juicing but there are some things they say that have no grounding in medical science or clinical reality. Talk to Dr. David Brownstein and he will tell you that often the first thing a patient needs is water and salt but its real salt not table salt he is talking about and prescribing for his patients.

    Hi There. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis with very high antibody levels. I’m looking into doing a detox that includes the use of Himalayan Pink Salt to replace electrolytes during the cleanse. With Hashimoto’s it’s recommended that one is very careful with iodine intake. I’m wondering if anyone out there has any experience with this. Thanks!

    • Salt is in at least 95% NaCl. There’s no real difference. If it was formed 230 million years ago and was constantly exposed to the environment pollution then its now the most polluted.

    After doing some research on Himalayan Salt I’ve become quite alarmed at the amount of fluoride that’s in it. It’s very high! I’ve been drinking sole everyday for several years now and feel like I have poisoned my body with this stuff. I think this needs to be brought to people’s attention as we know that fluoride is toxic and not beneficial for us to consume, especially in high amounts that Himalayan Salt has. Wonder how much fluoride is in Real Salt?

        teeth turning brown is the least of our worries with fluoride. Dr. Sircus has done a lot of research on this as have I. Do a search on our site for “fluoride”….put it into the search box found at the top of each page for the essays written on this damaging water additive.       Dr Wallach and many others have tried to explain but no one’s listening- Rock minerals (lead, fuoride, arsenic etc.) are POISON…Then there are THE VERY SAME lead… arsenic.. and fluoride etc. but PLANT DERIVED…and these are necessary minerals for the body. Once plants have taken up the rock minerals and processed them through the plants body then they become the necessary minerals for life. These are called PLANT DERIVED MINERALS.

    Doctor Sircus I bought some pink himalayan salt. I am aware that it is meant to have red or pink flecks in it – however I have become alarmed when some of the grains of red refuse to dissolve even at high heat (the rest of the salt dissolves). Is this normal for this kind of salt? Should I eat what I have? Thank you.

    • Your best bet would be to contact the manufacturer or retailer of the salt you purchased. Some crystals are bigger than others but not sure about the non-dissolving crystals. Claudia French

Where did Dr Sircus get his information for the “Himalayan salt contains 84 minerals and trace elements in ionic state” that he mentioned in the article above? Being a Doctor, I assume that he had samples tested, or at least read lab results before writing that. Where can we see those reports? Thank you.

    • Hello Vivian,

      Most of the endorsed products have supplied Dr. Sircus with reliable lab testing results. Generally we recommend sites that will also provide these to you if they are asked for them. I think you can feel confident that we are determining from the best available information, what the results are. We generally also go along with and recommend independent testing if its available. Dr. Sircus does not have capability of doing his own testing however. You should be able to access any independent testing that a company claims they have had done by writing directly to the company and asking for that.

    What’s all this concern about trace minerals like fluoride, arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury and others found in minute trace amounts in natural salts all about? Seems like everyone wants to place things in either all good or all bad categories. Well, based on my research and beliefs, seemingly toxic minerals are likely beneficial in trace amounts. Heck, we as humans evolved on this planet in their presence and our bodies probably found some valuable uses for them in very small amounts. Studies I’ve seen indicate that even arsenic, lead and mercury are vital in extremely small amounts, likely in the order of somewhere in the order of 12.5 to 25 micrograms per day. I recall a study where arsenic was completely removed from the diets of chickens, goats and other animals with serious health consequences including infertility and even cases of death. Yup, arsenic from arsenosugars, bromine and other trace minerals are found in seaweeds along with high amounts of iodine (in Kelp with recorded Iodine levels having been recorded in some isolated samples up to an unbelievable 0.5%). There are no ill effects for isolated populations of blacknose sheep that eat a diet exclusively of seaweeds off the coast of Scotland. They have no access to their natural diet of grasses due to the cliffs adjacent to the shoreline. The abundance of arsenic has been evaluated in these sheep and no adverse findings were found with the sheep or their offspring. Arsenic based arsenosugars are now generally considered of no or very low toxicity at worse by some scientists. I believe it’s all about balance as nature normally provides us. The problems arise when we offset natures balance with highly processed mineral deficient foods. Think about this… 4.5 grams of salt per kilogram of body weight is 50/50 fatal, but so is NO salt. Too much oxygen leads to hyperventilation, but no oxygen leads to death in a few minutes. To much water and we drown. Too much or too little of all things are problematic. I truly doubt the trace minerals are a problem and more likely believe they are overall beneficial. Oh yeah, the Japanese eat seaweeds almost daily with all those seemingly toxic trace minerals and have the longest life expectancies in the world. Just my opinion and observation…

      One more thing about arsenic and my beliefs, I mention above the relatively low or almost zero toxicity associated with arsenic in the form which naturally found as arsenosugars, an organic form, yet inorganic compounds of arsenic are considered very toxic. Organic arsenic is added to chicken and other animal feeds as it appears to produce healthier animals with higher body weights. The problem with added arsenic in chicken feed is when bird droppings break down in the soil, they can convert to inorganic arsenic compounds which can contaminate well and other water supplies. As for another generally believed toxic substance… Fluoride is naturally occurring as Calcium Fluoride (Fluorite rock mineral) and is relatively abundant in nature. According to my research into the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), Calcium Fluorite is slightly LESS toxic than Sodium Chloride (table salt). Look it up!!! This is the Fluoride naturally found in some water sources and attributed to healthy teeth in certain populations. But I suspect there’s a flaw in the traditional belief about Fluoride in that there is belief that unnatural sources of Fluoride from waste products of the fertilizer and aluminum industries are also safe in toothpaste and water additives. Example, Sodium Fluoride found in toothpaste is almost 100 times more toxic than naturally occurring Calcium Fluoride. How can the two be interchanged and considered comparable? Again, just my opinion….

        I agree, but I also think a lot of it is to do with synergy. Whilst too much of one element in isolation may well be harmful, the presence of all the other elements likely helps to create a balance. As Dr. Sircus and many others point out, sodium chloride in isolation as ‘table salt’ is harmful, yet as part of the complete structure of unrefined salt, it is not. Maybe all the elements work in harmony to keep the balance right within the body, or give the body the elements it needs to remove or chelate excessive loading of any individual element (as perhaps in possible amalgam toxicity….)

        In nature, nothing works in isolation. An orange is not just Vitamin C. Raw unrefined Milk is not just calcium. They are complete foods supplying many beneficial elements to the body. Like salt, once they become denatured or incomplete, such as processed orange juice, or pasteurised, homogenised dairy, they are viewed as no longer beneficial, and by many, even harmful.

    Does anyone have a link to research that proves that a person can absorb minerals by that eating rock salt? I’ve been researching whether it is better to go salt free of to eat lots of rock salts. I need a solid piece of evidence by a doctor with a solid medical background that proves the the human body can absorb the minerals from the salt. I want to be able to see the research. I have not question that salt has lots of minerals but those minerals are unless if the body can’t absorb it.

      As far as I am concerned the human body is designed to absorb minerals from plants, not from rocks.

    Hello, I also see that mercury, bromine, fluoride and lead are listed as some of the 84 trace elements in the Himalayan Pink Salt. I really want to get on board with this health notion and use it with my family. Came across an article that said “beware”, and now I am spooked. Please shed some light on the seemingly “less than desirable” elements in this salt.


  • This is a great post on the different types of salts. I’ve been using Celtic Sea Salt and Himalayan Pink Salt for quite a while now. The trick is to use them both, this way you won’t be missing out on any of the naturally occurring trace elements.

    I will now add the Redmond Real Salt to my chicken and see how it reacts in my body. Remember, something can work for a person and not work for you, so the best strategy is to test everything out and Do what works for You!

    Himalayan salt comes from very old land locked sources, perhaps even millions of years old. Celtic Salt in comparison is “fresh”. This again is a personal preference issue
    fundamentally. Whilst some might say the pink salt has been kept away
    from the modern world, the area the Celtic Salt
    is harvested from is absolutely pristine, and is carefully protected to
    keep it this way. It has to meet vigorous purity and safety
    standards. And the ocean is actually very purifying, and a self
    cleaning environment. It cleans and oxygenates itself all the time, and
    sustains many types of life forms. The water from which Celtic Salt
    comes from has not touched any land until it reaches the beautiful salt
    marshes of Brittany. Were there impurities; land locked sources of
    salt would in fact be more likely to retain these than sea water salts.

    Celtic Sea Salt retains all the minerals in sea water and sea water
    contains the concentration of minerals washed down for over 4000 yrs.
    Himalayan salt contains the minerals than were in it when it was laid
    down reflecting what minerals were washed down from the soil and
    deposited at the time of formation. Himalayan Salt is lower in
    Magnesium. Remember that Magnesium is the essential mineral that is
    deficient in so most people.

    The 24 extra trace minerals that are supposed to be in Himalayan Salt are unaccounted for. How so?
    All salt companies use independent labs to know what minerals are in
    the product. The salt company tells the lab to test for the certain
    minerals. For example, a salt company would request the lab to test for
    84 specific minerals.

    In the lab results, the mineral analysis will show some minerals with a number of <.00001%. Real Salt explains what this means:

    When a lab reports <.00001% of gold it doesn’t mean
    they found a tiny amount of gold, it means the lab equipment can’t
    detect amounts of gold lower than .00001%. In plain English, a
    technician […] would say, “our equipment didn’t detect gold […]”
    Whenever you see the “less than” sign in lab results, it is the same as
    saying “not found in this sample.”

    So trace minerals listed for salt, with a measurement of
    <.00001% are not in the salt… but the companies still claim these
    minerals in their total mineral count! Real Salt, however,
    wants to be as straight forward with their mineral numbers as possible,
    for the benefit of their customers. They state that it contains only 60
    trace minerals because they only list the minerals that are actually in
    the salt.

    Another excellent article.
    I have read that elements of ‘quirky’ pseudo-natural health are becoming more mainstream and even Big Pharma and the conventional medical system are being drawn in. As example, leaky gut was denigrated by the medical professional but now is being accepted as a legitimate medical concern.

    For convenience, I grind a small mixture of Himalayan and Celtic salts and add in some potassium, magnesium and a pinch or two of Borax (see the Borax Conspiracy by Walter Last), about a small salt shaker size, hoping for a synergetic effect. For cooking I have the two salts mixed in a small glass container at hand.
    Will try your suggestion of sole food.

    I am allergic to sulfer and have had reactions to both the Real Salt and the Himalayan Pink Salt. What other options are there for me? I have a very hard time keeping my electrolytes balanced also.

    • Personally I don’t know of a good substitute that would provide you with at least the minimum requirement of salt. Most salts have some amount of sulfur….some more than others. Sorry I can’t give you a better idea other than totally saltless herbal seasonings. Not sure iuf those alone would keep you in electrolyte balance.

      I am also allergic to sulfur but I use Himalayan Pink Salt and have had no problems with it. Maybe my allergy to it isn’t as bad as yours. I’ve had problems with meds that had sulfur – the first gave me a rash while another made me red as a beet – literally.
      Hopefully you have found a good salt you can use.

    Hello! Thanks for the info! I have a question: my mom has a toxic nodule on her thyroid and was told not to consumer iodine. My concern about switching to a whole salt is iodine content for her. What would be your recommendation? Is one whole salt lower in iodine than others? Thanks!!

      Most unrefined salt has very little iodine.. Iodine should be supplemented when using any unrefined salt.

      I’d look a whole lot further than your medical doctor who knows precious little about thyroid health or any type of health. Read Dr. David Brownstein’s book “Iodine, Why You Need It and Why You Can’t Live Without it.” Allopathy is concerned with drugs and treating symptoms, not in supporting the body so that it can heal itself. Drugging people (and pets) resolves nothing and creates more and more damage to the respective bodies which is, in turn, treated with more and more drugs. Iodine is absolutely vital for thyroid health, as well as the rest of the body. Your mom’s thyroid is screaming for iodine.

        It really depends on the thyroid condition. For people with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, elevated iodine intake can exacerbate the condition and iodine restriction has been shown to ameliorate the condition.

      I put a drop of LUGOL’S iodine on the sole of each foot- each night…(cotton bud) and let my body take in the iodine when and if it’s needed. If it disappears by the next day I do it again- if not I wait til it does before putting another drop, I’ve read by many doctors that it’s a safer way of taking in iodine when the thyroid is involved.

    Hi! Instead of spring water, will the Himalayan sea salt sole be as effective if we use distilled water?

    • Dear Rochelle,

      Since a good quality spring water has many minerals in it and distilled water is stripped of all minerals there would be a difference. I am not sure if this means more of the salt would be needed for the same effect or not or if remineralization of the distilled water would be recommended first. Perhaps someone reading here could give us the answer.
      Spring water is the most recommended water I have seen for making Sole.

    i have read on-line that cancer patients should not be using any salt (it didnt actually distinguish between table salt and Celtic sea salt- which is odd, because the entire article did make this distinction). Any idea why they would make this statement- ‘cancer patients should be consuming no salt’? And would this go for Celtic Sea salt as well?

    I have used both Real salt and Himalayan pink crystal salt for making Sole and i cant clearly taste or feel a difference. The pink salt does have a better look sitting in the glass jar of Sole though.

    I’m confused about the Himalayan salt. I read that it contains cadmium, aluminun, arsenic and other traces of harmful minerals. I have been using it for few years and now I read 2 negative articles. Please, tell me something about it. Dr. Sircus say in this article that Celtic Salt does not contain those harmful minerals.

      Dr. Sircus is always concerned about the levels of heavy metals in the products he recommends and sometimes the amounts in salt will depend on the area it is harvested in from, or how much processing or what type it goes through. The best way to be sure of what you are using is to ask the company for a recent copy of their lab analysis of the products they sell. Most will give this to you or have it already on their websites. Then you can see what the amounts of various things are in your chosen salt before you purchase. Claudia French

      I’ve read that it also contains fluoride….something that is not needed in our bodies even in tiny amounts.

      • I hate fluoride as much as you do but it is indeed useful to the body in tiny amounts. It will help you with your teeth and bones but in excess it will create a lot of damage.

          Actually, fluoride does more harm than it does good. Did you know that Fluoride is officially classified as a Neurotoxin in the world’s most Prestigious Medical Journal? The Lancet, has officially classified fluoride as a neurotoxin, in the same category as arsenic, lead and mercury.

            The fluoride in drinking water is not the same as the trace element in salt. All the elements in trace amounts are beneficial, and help to keep each other balanced within the body.

            It is the chemicals and elements used in isolation in man-made products and services that are the biggest issue, not naturally -balanced complete foods including unrefined salt.

            There is a huge difference between the benefit of complete food and substances and the harmful effects of incomplete food and substances, but most are oblivious. Just because it looks, smells and tastes like food doesn’t mean it is food. There is a lot of peudo-food out there. Tempting, enticing, beguiling……but not beneficial……

            Fluoride is not beneficial to the human body in any amount! It is a neuro-toxin. It isn’t even needed by the body.

            Ritchie – further up the comments – goes into this in more detail. Naturally occurring Calcium fluorite is not the same as the fluoride that is added to municipal water. if you read my post below his, I speak of synergy. Nothing in nature works in isolation. Salt is a great demonstrator of that. In its purified form Sodium Chloride causes problems within the body. As unrefined salt, complete with its quota of other elements, it doesn’t. Drug companies do the same thing. They isolate what they consider to be the ‘active ingredient’ and dismiss the rest of the elements in a plant or substance as unimportant. But they all interact and the other elements act as buffers and support to the ‘active ingredient’. That is why, whilst Aspirin may make your stomach bleed, White Willow Bark from which it is derived is highly unlikely to (unless taking Aspirin previously has triggered acute sensitivity).

            Of course fluoride is toxic. So is mercury, arsenic, cadmium and even calcium, magnesium and water in excessive amounts. Ingesting too many Mars Bars, donuts and Twinkies won’t do you much good either, nor will drinking bleach….

            Putting it in perspective, everything in nature is beautifully designed and balanced. Everything man does with nature, isn’t. They play with and mess with elements they do not understand. They do not comprehend or even acknowledge the existence of synergy. They do not understand that elements used in unnatural ways or foods denatured from their original forms are damaging.

            I know which one I would rather trust….

    • Steve, yes you can use Celtic Salt to make sole. Look for recipes on the Internet or in Dr. Sircus book Treatment Essentials.

    I am also a Chinese Medicine Practitioner. My wife and I have been using Real Salt for the last year but we do not suffer from high blood pressure. I am hesitant to suggest Real Salt to my patients without hearing from someone that they have seen good results with there own patients. The only information I have found is on the Real Salt website. Any experience that you have had with patients would be greatly appreciated if you would share it.

  • Mark, we all have our opinions and Charlotte must have been really scared by an old salt tale. Speaking of minerals the magnesium and potassium in “pink” salt keep you in the pink.

    What about sulfur? Organic sulfur? Synergistic with salt, volcanic magma into salt water frees the sulfur to begin the sulfur cycle and the aquatic food chain, everything in the ocean eats plankton, plankton eat sulfur freed by salt.

    2013 is the year we tell everyone about sulfur and that includes South America, shucks irt means seven billion people and then we tell the bullies to stand or die.
