Drink Coffee and Live Longer

We coffee drinkers, especially us older ones, can drink each cup knowing that we are going to live longer because of it. It turns out coffee is one of the healthiest drinks, medicinal in fact, anti-aging medicine at its best. Adults who drink four cups of coffee a day have a 64% lower risk of dying according to a new 10-year Spanish study, compared to those who rarely or never drink coffee. The effect is strongest for people over 45.

Presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Barcelona, researchers found that those who drank the most coffee (four or more cups a day) were 64% less likely to die during the study than those who drank the least (seldom or never) coffee. Overall, every two cups of coffee people consumed per day was associated with a 22% lower risk of death over 10 years.

That association remained even when the researchers controlled for factors including gender, smoking status, and whether the coffee drinkers added sugar to their coffee. Dr. Adela Navarro, a cardiologist at Hospital de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, says drinking four cups of coffee a day “can be part of a healthy diet in healthy people,” she says.

Other studies published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in July also found that regular coffee consumption was associated with a reduced risk of death—one in a U.S. population that included African-American, Japanese-Americans, Latino, and white participants, and one in a European population spanning 10 countries. An earlier study in 2012 of over 400,000 people, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, reported that coffee consumption is associated with a 10% reduction in all-cause mortality at 13-year follow-up.

The turning point for coffee came with the publication in 2008 of a Harvard-led study, that examined data on over 130,000 participants from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow up Study who were followed for about 20 years. The results showed regularly consuming up to 6 cups of coffee per day (containing around 100 mg caffeine per 8 oz. cup) was not linked with increased deaths in either men or women, from any cause, or death from cancer, or from cardiovascular disease. Until recently, the coffee news was that it was not bad but now we, all 250 million of us North Americans, and countless people around the globe, can drink up the good news about how our coffee is adding to our lives.

Coffee Prevents Heart Disease and Stroke

Coffee ingestion is, on average, about one third of that of tap water in North America and Europe. (International Journal of Cancer) Some of the evidence that has emerged in recent years suggests that coffee consumption may lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. A Kaiser Permanente study presented at an American Heart Association conference found coffee drinkers were less likely to be hospitalized for heart rhythm disturbances.

In 2012, a US study found that drinking coffee in moderation, may also protect slightly against heart failure. For women, coffee drinking may mean a lower risk of stroke.

Researchers in Sweden followed over 30,000 women for 10 years found those who drank more than one cup of coffee per day appeared to have a 22 to 25% lower risk of stroke, compared to non-drinkers.

Good Coffee & Great Coffee

I have been drinking coffee since I was five years old. My mother started me on Coffee Time Syrup and I have been addicted ever since. Unfortunately, it took another sixty years before I learned to enjoy coffee without the sugar and before I learned that there is coffee and there is coffee. This past year I have been also been turned on to the first seed infused coffee in the world.     Are we talking about coffee with or without caffeine? I have been forewarned to stay away from caffeinated coffee by my cardiologist, it contributes to occasional arrhythmias. Since I have an ICD chugging away, I can easily and readily see that caffeine is a real problem. I’m guessing that there are studies done that would indicate the real truth about caffeine and regular coffees in contrast to decaf.

    Thank you for verifying the health benefits of coffee. I am glad to see these independent studies on this subject, because the
    “establishment” is not going to tell anyone what is healthy, except of course poisons in our foods. We, the people must do our own research, such as Dr. Sircus. Thank you. You are a champion of health freedom and insight. God Bless.

    I completely disagree. Coffee has a toxin built in that acts as a poison in your body. Your body holds onto weight to protect you from it. Caffeine is not good for your kidneys, stomach, brain or heart. Huge deception. Those who push coffee must either not know the truth about it, or have something to gain by advertising the non-existent benefits. I’m disappointed to see Dr. Sircus join the disinformation bandwagon on coffee.

      Absolutely correct J.A. the consequences on magnesium in the system are significant and I seem to recall Dr. Sircus reported on this.
      This is extremely disappointing. I have researched several positive coffee studies and I am certain some of the ones you referenced Dr. Sircus and found them all to have misleading or completely incorrect scientific conclusions.
      Research the clear connection between coffee and magnesium depletion and its devastating effects on the ATP. Coffee and phytate, Coffee beans also contain phytic acid. Coffee negatively effects PH and you know the consequences of that.
      I do not understand you presenting this in this manner without doing the research on the studies you presented and contradicting a significant factor in the majority of your excellent work on Magnesium.
      Most people are consuming the most convenient coffee available and adding processed sugar or even worse sugar substitutes and cream the tiny benefits you claim here do not even come close to negative effects the coffee is having on your readers and yourself Dr Sircus.

      Please do the proper research and rewrite this article.

      I do not drink coffee anymore. I found out the hard way it is a poison to our bodies. sorry to hear people supporting coffee as it is another slow poison pushed on us by the powers that be. Don’t be fooled, there are better ways to live longer.

      Yes, being a coffee addict for 10 years definitly took its toll of my health. My sleep was all over the place, but because I was tired, I would just drink more coffee! And I only ever drank maybe 2 -3 cups/day MAX! I have serious suspicions about claims that we can safely drink 6 cups per day. That’s crazy caffeine levels! It’s a good way to ensure adrenal burnout, that’s for sure. After giving up coffee, I am now so sensitive to caffeine that even just a coffee sample from Trader Joes sends me over the moon! Any soft of caffeine also makes my hair fall out, so one more reason to stay away from it. It’s hard for me to believe that starting the day with a cup of coffee is healthier than tea, or fresh juice.
