Hanging by a Thread

Description: 2591871-hanging-by-a-thread.jpg

After writing my essay “Radioactive Hell on Earth”—actually I wanted to change that title to “Fukushima on Steroids”—I see Christina Consolo’s essay “Fukushima is Falling Apart”: Are you ready—it is becoming clear that we, our children and our entire civilization is hanging by a thread. It is a very sorry thing to report that we have literally shot ourselves in the foot with a big nuclear shotgun full of radioactive particles of the worst conceivable kind.

It has taken a year but finally “a U.S. Senator finally got off his ass and went to Japan to see what is going on over there. What he saw was horrific. Reactor No. 4 building is on the verge of collapsing. Seismicity standards rate the building at a zero, meaning even a small earthquake could send it into a heap of rubble. And sitting at the top of the building, in a pool that is cracked, leaking, and precarious even without an earthquake, are 1,565 fuel rods.” If an earthquake or other event were to cause this pool to drain, this could result in a catastrophic radiological fire that could wipe out most of the northern hemisphere; certainly it would be a massive civilization-breaking event.

After an onsite tour of what remains of the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear facilities, U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), a senior member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, sent a letter to Japanese Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki saying, “The scope of damage to the plants and to the surrounding area was far beyond what I expected. The precarious status of the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear units and the risk presented by the enormous inventory of radioactive materials and spent fuel in the event of further earthquake threats should be of concern to all and a focus of greater international support and assistance.”

1,565 fuel rods translates into 460 tons of nuclear fuel stored in pool in a barely intact building on its third and fourth floors. If the storage pool breaks and runs dry, the nuclear fuel inside will overheat and explode. The worst-case scenario drawn up by the government includes not only the collapse of the No. 4 reactor pool, but also the disintegration of spent-fuel rods from all the plant’s other reactors. The wall of the south side is falling apart at reactor No. 4 and Dr. Helen Caldicott said she would evacuate her family from Boston if it did.

Consolo says, “If this pool collapses, as Senator Wyden is now saying too, we would face a mass extinction event from the release of radiation in those rods. This may be the most important thing you ever pay attention to for the sake of your family, friends, your neighbors, every one you know and meet, all of humanity.”

“Preliminary reports of soil contamination are starting to come in from the USGS, who has seemed reluctant to share this information. Los Angeles, California, Portland, Oregon and Boulder, Colorado so far have the highest radioactive particle contamination out of the entire U.S. Iodine, cesium, strontium, plutonium, uranium, and a host of other fission products have been coming directly from Japan to the west coast for thirteen months. Reports in the past week indicate the pollen in southern California is radioactive now too, and it is flying around, and if you live there and go outside, you are breathing it in. And so are your children,” continued Consolo.

Spent reactor fuel cannot be simply lifted into the air by a crane as if it were routine cargo. In order to prevent severe radiation exposures, fires and possible explosions, it must be transferred at all times in water and heavily shielded structures into dry casks. As this has never been done before, the removal of the spent fuel from the pools at the damaged Fukushima-Dai-Ichi reactors will require a major and time-consuming reconstruction effort and will involve charting in unknown waters. Reports indicate that things are so hopeless at the plant that workers are not even working on weekends and certainly governments around the world have not gotten together in a desperate Manhattan Project[1] (in reverse) to save humanity.

Arnold Gundersen, a former nuclear power industry executive, is claiming that the Fukushima nuclear disaster is already 10 times worse than the 1986 Chernobyl meltdown in the former Soviet Union. If that is true it’s already taps for a whole lot of men, women and children in the northern hemisphere with the absolute promise that the radiation will continue relentlessly through the coming years. It is sounding like nuclear hell coming to earth to teach us something about our arrogance, massive stupidity and pathetic weakness.

While our government would love us all to believe that the nuclear problems in Japan are under control, nothing could be farther from the truth. Engineers for Tokyo Electric Power Co. (Tepco) say readings of airborne radiation inside reactor No. 2 showed almost 73 sieverts per hour this week. To put that into perspective, exposure to that amount of radiation would kill a normal person within minutes. These levels are some of the highest readings since the beginning of the disaster and there is no one telling us that this nuclear contamination will lessen.

MOX Plutonium Fuel

The mixed oxide fuel (MOX) reactor[2], which burns with plutonium/uranium, is more deadly than those burning on uranium-enriched fuel, according to nuclear experts. The half-life of plutonium-239 in MOX is 24,000 years and just a few milligrams of P-239 escaping in a smoke plume will contaminate soil for tens of thousands of years. A single milligram (mg) of MOX is as deadly as 2,000,000 mg of normal enriched uranium meaning that one mg of MOX is basically two million times more powerful than one mg of uranium. If even a small amount of this potent substance escapes from the plant in a smoke plume, the particles will travel with the wind and contaminate soil for tens of thousands of years.

Ray Guilmette of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements said that plutonium “is thousands of times more radioactive than uranium,” if absorbed into the body.

Donald Olander, professor emeritus of nuclear engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, said that because plutonium decays quickly, it produces radiation that can kill cells in the body more quickly. But the plutonium itself would pose a severe threat only if it was involved in a violent reaction that turned it into dust particles that could be inhaled. No one knows the exact number but plenty of the fuel rods at risk are MOX, thus containing deadly plutonium. If that blows up then we might end up wishing we had had a nuclear war instead.

Limited Nuclear Exchange

If you want to know what this means from mainstream sources, tune into what International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) and its U.S. affiliate, Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) are saying would happen from just a limited nuclear war—forget about a full-scale meltdown of thousands of dirty nuclear fuel rods.

More than a billion people around the world would face starvation following a limited regional nuclear weapons exchange (such as a clash between India and Pakistan) that would cause major worldwide climate disruption, driving down food production in China, the U.S. and other nations, according to a major new report released by Dr. Ira Helfand, the author of Nuclear Famine: A Billion People at Risk. Helfand said, “The needless and preventable deaths of one billion people over a decade would be a disaster unprecedented in human history. It would not cause the extinction of the human race, but it would bring an end to modern civilization as we know it.”

The Dalai Lama summaries the situation saying, “We have degenerated into an insane society, unconsciously committing mass suicide by ecocide. Unrestrained corporate capitalism coercively and insidiously exploits vulnerable people and myopically plunders, depletes and corrupts finite planetary resources that sustain life. Billions of people suffer needless poverty, starvation and avoidable disease, while obscenely privileged corporate, political and religious plutocrats greedily acquire power and excessive material wealth far beyond their conceivable needs.”

Special Note: These subjects are covered in my Nuclear Toxicity Syndrome book as well as the second edition of my Iodine book (both published in 2011), which dive deeply into the issue and threat of radioactive iodine. Having lots of sulfur on hand as well as sodium bicarbonate, iodine, clay and magnesium is a good start for a radiation survival home pharmacy.

I noticed that in John’s Statement of beliefs

    4. The Fall of Man
Man was created good and upright; for God said,
“Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.”
However, man by voluntary transgression fell and
thereby incurred not only physical death but also
spiritual death, which is separation from God
    (Genesis 1:26,27; 2:17; 3:6; Romans 5:12-19).

It Should read. Then God said, “Let us MAKE (NOT MADE) mankind in our image”
    in our likeness,

Man was NOT made upright, he was MADE in a fallen state

Now the real truth – (Rom. 8:20-22)

“For the creature [and/or creation itself] was MADE subject to VANITY (VANITY: empty,
profitless, vain, transientness [temporary], depravity [wickedness]) NOT WILLINGLY,
but by reason of Him [that’s God] Who HATH SUBJECTED the same in hope.
Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the BONDAGE OF CORRUPTION
into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the WHOLE CREATION
groans and travails IN PAIN until NOW”

We were made this way by God

Where in the bible does it talk about a spiritual death

John wants you to think that “the wages of sin is death
    and eternal seperation from God”.

Making God look like a failure when we know the ALL
creation will be delivered from bongage (saved).

    go read Romans 5:12-19

Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people,
so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people.
19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners,
so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

It says the exact opposite. John is Authoring his own Bible, denying
    God true plan for humanity.

i’m positive we can work to bring health to this situation.

it would involve taking the trillions of dollars spent on the military and war and investing it in cleaning this place up. stop destabilizing Africa for cheap resources, ask them, the world (cause it concerns the world) to ally n invest our global resources to clean up! build multiple walls full of absorbent metals, and there are several.

    dream n manifest!

I keep thinking, what fool of an engineer decided to put 460 tons of nuclear waste ten metres up in the air in an earthquake and tsunami zone?

All the nuclear plants I’ve visited as an activist have their waste pools on the ground.

It was no doubt done that way for economic concerns; perhaps the cost of lowering the waste to the ground was considered excessive.

I just re-watched The China Syndrome the other day. We’ve known since the ’70s that cost trumps safety, every time! Why don’t we ever learn?

    • http://www.hawkeshealth.net Islander

Jan, you need to read Greg Palast’s VULTURES’ PICNIC. Palast, IMO the world’s greatest investigative journalist, documents EXACTLY what costs were cut and what safety was compromised. This plant never passed its seismic qualification, was never legally certified to withstand a seismic event. It’s all in the book, in excruciating detail.

  • Concerned

Can someone please point me to what I can do to protect my family?

  • Cynthia Groves

I have requested Dept of Radiation at Dept of Health in HI to monitor radiation levels after I saw the article on the plant explosion on-line which apparently occurred on 4/22/12 and the video of a cloud of uranium heading toward Hawaii and the West Coast dated 4/27/12 Is this for real? There has been no mention in the news in Hawaii that I am aware of.
I’ve requested investigation and confirmation from CDC and Nuclear Regulatory Agency and Civil Defense of Hawaii.

If this was a hoax, it has wasted a lot of time. If not, Thank you for the posts.
Let’s pray for our health, well-being and sanity.

Please tell us, where did you get the quote of Dalai Llama saying “We have degenerated into an insane society, unconsciously committing mass suicide by ecocide.

    • Tony Milton

Yes, this hardly sounds like H.H. The Dalai Lama.

    • Claudia – IMVA Staff

The quote from the Dalai Lama is real and was published by him in 1988.

You can read his entire commentary here: http://shantagabriel.com/wisdom-from-the-dalai-lama/

(From “Humanity and Ecology”, © 1988, The Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama)

If you scroll to the bottom of the link offered above, you will see that the entire article there was simply copied from another blog, and if you visit that link you will see that only two small parts of the article, in italics, are attributable to H.H the Dalai Lama. The rest of the article is the writing of the blog author.

        • Claudia – IMVA Staff

          Shelly,

          Thanks for the correction.

These words of the Dalai Lama about each of us needing to take some individual responsibility for our world are very powerful:

Be of good courage. Each of us can die only once – whether we end our short lives alone or perish as a species in a cataclysm. No worries, Earth will live on. She has all the time necessary to cleanse and detoxify her seas, mountains and plains. Unlike us, she counts her life in eons.

If we have been so stupid as to render our home uninhabitable for the next fifty thousand generations, we should expect, nay, we should HOPE to be shoved brutally aside so that a smarter species can prevail. Unfortunately, no one will save us from ourselves.

    • Ian

      Beautifuly said!

    • http://www.EcoReality.org Jan Steinman

My only hope is that enough of our artifacts survive so that the sentient bonobos or cetaceans or canids who follow will have fair warning. Tim Weissman (A World Without Us) estimates our bronze statues may last ten million years — long enough for a new sentient species to arise.

Catherine Aird wrote: “If you can’t be a good example, then you’ll just have to be a horrible warning.” Perhaps that is humanity’s raison d’etre.

    • http://help.auk.ca/ Raven Singularity

The problem with the Earth recovering theory, is that some of the radioactive damage has a half-life of the current age of the Earth — 4,500,000,000 years. In other words, if we end up with a cascade of failing nuclear power plants around the world, the Earth will not be recovering, and our sun will be gone before the radioactivity has passed.

I see hope in focused application of technology for the purpose of species survival. We have the technology to clean radioactive waste from our environment, but we need this developed decades ago, not *after* a horrendous nuclear event.

      • http://help.auk.ca/ Raven Singularity

I didn’t mean that we already have the technology to clean up radioactive waste (we do not), I meant that we have the capability of producing such technology, but only if we set our collective mind to solving the massive problems we’re facing.

  • Anuj Wankhede

Horrific. And what’s worse, the madmen are planning to *restart* some of the reactors!
It’s true that if we don’t learn from our mistakes, we are condemned – to be irradiated.

  • the doctor

I may stand corrected, but the weight of the pool, the rods, the concrete etc. which stand between us and the unknown is some 8.25 million pounds. That weight, with exposed moving water, is stacked on top of a crumbling child’s erector set, which can’t really be shored up properly for all the obvious reasons. This set up needs to stay PERFECTLY in place for the foreseeable future. Damacles was lucky, at least he knew what he was up against, the unknowns here are far greater then the knowns. Why is this not a global issue? Why are the people who are SOLELY in charge are the very same people who created the mess and are bankrupt – financially and morally? Why is there more written attention paid to William and Kate (two people who’s global effect is zero) and American Idol Contestants who are in fact killing things, but at least it’s only the brain cells of those who watch.

What will be the most surreal day in all of human history is “The Day The Pool Falls” when billions, not thousands or millions, but billions say, “how come I knew nothing about this?” And, “why was TEPCO in charge of all of human life?”

  • anita graham

I want to thank our beloved Senator Ron Wyden for reporting on this.
He didn’t have to go do this, and is already dealing with cancer.
He is brave, caring and compassionate.
He should be honored for going above and beyond his duty in what he did by going there,
putting himself at further risk, to bring the truth to everyone…because NO ONE ELSE was brave enough to go get it done.
I am grateful to you, Senator Wyden.

      • http://www.EcoReality.org Jan Steinman

        Hear, hear!

I’m a proud supporter of Senator Wyden, one of the most principled people in government. When the Federal Government was cracking down on Oregon’s Death With Dignity law, Wyden filibustered the Senate to keep the Feds out of our business.

A filibuster is not unusual, but Wyden is Catholic, and is personally against assisted suicide. He said that he represented the citizens of Oregon, not his own beliefs, and they twice voted for assisted suicide, so he put his own beliefs aside to do the job he was elected to do. I don’t know of many other politicians who would do that.

  • John Fryer

I second the thanks to Dr Sircus for the TRUTH about the horror of this catastrophe matched by the complete IGNORANCE of those CHARGED with our safety (the FUTURE mankind).

A cursory glimpse at the population of the UKRAINE since 1986 tells ALL.

A missing 10 million human souls and what is the quality of life of those that are there?

Compare to WHO or Nuclear Industry estimates of deaths from Chernobyl of less than a HUNDRED.

The only reason the southern hemisphere escapes is because the winds don’t usually get past the equator.

We need ECOLGISTS in political control not before it is TOO LATE but to pick up the bits that remain. Pity no one much supports them.

We do incidentally have SAFE nuclear power to supply our needs over and over again.

    It is called the SUN.

I only mention this as pre Chernobyl and pre Fukushima nuclear fans always quoted what would happen if we avoided nuclear energy completely. The sun would not be there for us.

This just shows the level of intelligence of those who think we can control Nuclear energy, GMO foods, putting MUTAGENS and CARCINOGENS in our food and medications etc etc.

Science is good that we know about things but putting it to practical use has proved beyond mans capability for many things except to make a hash that is then covered up or denied.

Nature and the billions of years to get here wins every time.

But shouldn’t science give a proper estimate of our LIMITATIONS?

    • anita graham

Does the southern hemisphere escape? Do not the oceans circulate eventually all over the earth? Maybe the interior areas….what about evaporation blowing in from off the water?

      • Gilgamesh

The Bible say; that No Place on Earth will be safe, or something like that. And I guess that is why people building underground bunkers everywhere.
But my opinion on this, is that no one in bible times was thinking about us , our time, 2012.
They were thinking about their own times, all their prophesies were limited to Bible times.
As nobody is predicting today what will be happening 2 or 3 thousand years from now.
Not only our Earth is changing, but all the planets in our Solar system, and we are also changing, and maybe the the changes are healing changes.A new science is also emerging from Russia, it will be a big changer in the next 10-30 years, in education, energy, health, medicine, and everything.
Not very many of the Russian books are translated as yet, but David Wilcock wrote a lot about the new sciences in his book; The Source Field Investigation.

I work with the public efforts to decommission the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in California, this posting of the threat of the global catastrophe imminent at Fukushima is NOT A JOKE, it is a horrific problem politicians will not speak of due to the financial implications to the their paying sponsors.
Consider that the hot topic of conversation among American politicians is whether women should be allowed to reproduce or not. Insanity is the status quo and remarks of humor directed at global catastrophic probabilities proves my point.
The World Media must investigate and publish the continuing disasters in Japan and allow discussion among the international governments to approach the potential catastrophe in a united effort to solve this tragic turn of events.
    If not now – when?
Is the planet mad from stress that no person can cope?
Humanity is in need of an abrupt turn of focus before this event becomes a reality of unreal proportions.
Think about sending news about this prospective global human catastrophe on to your friends and your newspaper, radio station, and corporate-paid elected political Representative.

I read your article, “Hanging by a Thread”. I will certainly pass it along. I do hope that the world will work together to remediate this situation. I have a question. I live in Boulder, CO. Why is it that Boulder already has high rates of radioactivity? Thank you very much for your response. Karen

    • el

its because of the way the air currents go from west to east over the rockys and then dump into the eastern front. If you can find some of the maps that show the radiation in color, you can see how the rad cloud hit central/lower california and then traveled “up the valley” into colorado. the Sierras got hit the same way…

the same way that El Nino snow storms travel to mammoth lakes ski area in california, then snowbird/alta in utah, then Summit county, then into Denver.

  • donald ferrari

I have just posted a not on my page and a link to this. My thought are, could we join together and ask silently or petition to ask the space brothers to intercede and eliminate the radiation???

    • Nikki Darwin

If the “space brother” cleaned up our mess we would just make more mess. This has happened before. Sorry, we are pretty stupid Blessings

    • Rev phil;

Ask as silently as you want, I will be shouting from the rooftops. However I am not going to hold my breath.
We have been committing suicide on this planet for years and see no reason an off worlder would want to save any of us.

I am going to be asking the off world entities to come and collect all those responsible for this disaster and all the other wars, along with their friends, families and associates, they are a blight on this planet and we no longer require their services.

Where they are dropped off, I do not care, so long as it is in a LOWER dimension and googleplex light years away from the furthest corner of that dimension.

      Namaste, rev;
