Lesson 64 – Treating Infections with Iodine

Many women find they get vaginal yeast infections (because their normal bacterial balance has been lost) after taking antibiotics. The fungal and yeast infections brought on by antibiotics will eventually be seen as one additional cause of cancer since more and more oncologists are seeing yeast and fungal infections as an integral part of cancer and its cause. With upwards of 40% of all cancers thought to be involved with and caused by infections,[1] the subject of antibiotics and the need for something safer, more effective and life-serving is imperative.

Every day, new strains of bacteria, fungi, and other
pathogenic microorganisms are becoming resistant to the
antibiotics that once dispatched them with extreme prejudice.

Though it kills 90% of bacteria on the skin within 90 seconds, the use of iodine as an antibiotic has been ignored during the last fifty years. Iodine exhibits activity against bacteria, molds, yeasts, protozoa, and many viruses; indeed, of all antiseptic preparations suitable for direct use on humans and animals and upon tissues, only iodine is capable of killing all classes of pathogens: gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, yeasts, viruses and protozoa.

Dr. Derry says that iodine is effective “for standard pathogens such as Staphylococcus, but iodine also has the broadest range of action, fewest side effects and no development of bacterial resistance.” There is a world of difference between using an antibiotic—anti-life substance—and an antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal substance like iodine, which is life-serving because it is a basic and most necessary nutritional substance.

Dr. David Derry wrote, “Iodine was the most effective agent for killing viruses, especially influenza viruses. Aerosol iodine was found to kill viruses in sprayed mists, and solutions of iodine were equally effective. In 1945, Burnet and Stone found that putting iodine on mice snouts prevented the mice from being infected with live influenza virus in mists. They suggested that impregnating masks with iodine would help stop viral spread. They also recommended that medical personnel have iodine-aerosol-treated rooms for examination and treatment of highly infected patients. Current methods of dealing with influenza infection are isolation, hand washing, antiviral drugs, and vaccinations. All of these methods can be improved by incorporating iodine into them. When impregnated with iodine, masks become much more effective, and hand washing is more effective when done with mild iodine solutions.”

Iodine offers a serious and potent replacement for many of the antibiotics that are literally destroying people’s lives and it can be used safely with children. Parents who choose not to dose their kids with dangerous vaccines will be glad to know that iodine can be very effective against a host of viral and bacterial infections that medical officials insist threaten children. Dr. David Brownstein, who uses iodine extensively in his practice, says, “Iodine is a wonderful antibiotic solution without question and most importantly I never see any of my patients complain of dysbiotic reactions [severe die off reaction] from its use.”

“How much iodine is enough? It has been shown that daily doses of iodine above 2-3 milligrams per day (about half a drop of Lugol’s from a standard eyedropper) saturate the thyroid within a couple of weeks. At this point, the thyroid gland stops taking up iodine. This means that at a dietary intake above 2-3 milligrams, all of the iodine goes to all its other functions in the body, such as killing off abnormal cells,” writes Dr. David Derry.

Dr. Gabriel Cousens points out the fact that Dr. Mercola believes the highest amount of daily iodine intake should be no more than 400 micrograms. This is only slightly higher than the FDA recommendation of 150-290 micrograms daily, dependent upon age, gender and life cycle. Amazingly, Mercola’s recommendation is dramatically less than what some of the leading iodine medical experts suggest—at least 12-18 milligrams (12,000-18,000 mcg) daily, 30-45 times higher.

Dr. Cousens:

Why this discrepancy? And how can Dr. Mercola, who is often so correct in his understanding, in my opinion, miss the mark exponentially?” Historically, as early as 1911, people normally took 300,000-900,000 micrograms [300-900 mg] daily without incident. This is over 2,000 times more than Dr. Mercola’s recommendation. How is it that now only 1/5,000th of this dose is now considered safe? In 1948 there was a poorly performed study that has never since been replicated alleging what is known as the Wolff-Chaikoff effect. The Wolff-Chaikoff effect suggested that theoretically hypothyroidism could occur as a result of excess iodine. This study indicated a decreased dosage to 2 milligrams daily would be safer. (This is still an amount five times higher than what Dr. Mercola is recommending.) Even the Food and Nutritional Board at the Institute of Medicine has set the tolerable upper limit of 1,100 micrograms [1.1 mg] of iodine daily (3 times higher than Dr. Mercola’s recommendation). Other researchers have used 3,000-6,000 micrograms/day [3-6 mg] to prevent goiter (14 times higher than Dr. Mercola’s recommendation). Iodine is found in every single one of our body’s hundred trillion cells. Without adequate iodine levels life is impossible. Iodine is the universal health nutrient and brings health on many levels.

In Dr. Cousens’ essay and in my book, Iodine - Bringing Back the Universal Medicine, we see that much higher levels of iodine supplementation have been used in studies since the early 1900s so where Mercola,[2] or anyone else gets off on suggesting that large amounts of iodine would be harmful is beyond me, especially because we know that high intake of iodine is associated with a lower risk of breast cancer. We also know that low iodine intake is associated with liver cancer.[3]

I reported in my iodine book that Dr. Brownstein uses 200-300 milligrams of iodine daily, with higher doses for more serious and difficult diseases. In perspective, this seemingly “high” dose is still far lower than what the 11th edition of the 1910-1911 Encyclopedia Britannica cites as the “usual” doses of 300-900 milligrams (300,000-900,000 micrograms!) of iodine daily.

“At 6 grams daily (which is 6 million mcg/day or 6,000 mg/day!), a much higher dose, iodine has been used to cure syphilis, skin lesions, and chronic lung disease,” says Cousens. “From a larger physiological perspective, it is important to realize that the thyroid is only one gland of many glands and tissues that needs iodine. Other glands/organs/systems with high iodine uptake are the breasts, ovaries, cervix, blood, lymph, bones, gastric mucosal, salivary, adrenal, prostate, colon, thymus, lungs, bladder, kidney, and skin. Iodine is found and used in every hormonal receptor in the body,” he states.

Cousens’ essay lists the important functions of iodine:

1) Iodine helps synthesize thyroid hormones and prevents both hypo- and hyperthyroidism.
2) Iodine sufficiency reverses hypo- and hyperthyroidism.
3) Iodine supports apoptosis.
4) Iodine activates hormone receptors and helps prevent certain forms of cancer.
5) Iodine protects ATP function and enhances ATP production.
6) Iodine prevents fibrocystic breast disease.
7) Iodine decreases insulin needs in diabetics.
8) Iodine helps support protein synthesis.
9) Iodine deficiency is a global health threat.
10) Iodine destroys pathogens, molds, fungi, parasites, and malaria.
11) Iodine supports immune function.
12) Iodine eliminates toxic halogens from the body (including radioactive I-131).
13) Iodine regulates estrogen production in the ovaries.
14) Iodine is anti-mucolytic (meaning it reduces mucus catarrh).
15) Iodine neutralizes hydroxyl ions and hydrates the cells.
16) Iodine makes us smarter.
17) Iodine prevents heart disease.
18) Iodine is needed with the use of cordless phones, cell phones and now smart meters to prevent hypothyroidism.
19) Iodine supports pregnancy (as the fetus undergoes more apoptosis than any other developmental stage). 
20) High doses of iodine may be used to reverse certain diseases.
21) High doses of iodine may be used for wounds, bedsores, inflammatory and traumatic pain, and restoration of hair growth when applied topically.
22) Iodine helps in the diminishing of tissue scarring, cheloid formations, and Dupuytren’s and Peyronie’s contractures, which are hyper-scarring conditions.
23) Iodine supports spiritual development.

These are all reasons to ingest higher doses of iodine. With the radioactive iodine circulating from Fukushima the issue with iodine supplementation is now critical, especially for fetuses and very young children.

Dr. David Brownstein said, “After testing individuals and finding low iodine levels, I began to use smaller milligram amounts of iodine/iodide (6.25 mg/day). Upon retesting these individuals 1-2 months later, little progress was made. I therefore began using higher milligram doses (6.25-50 mg) to increase the serum levels of iodine. It was only with these higher doses that I began to see clinical improvement as well as positive changes in the laboratory tests.”

Dr. Michael B. Schachter says, “The treatment dose when a person is iodine insufficient is generally between 12.5 and 50 mg daily. Preliminary research indicates that if a person is iodine insufficient, it takes about three months to become iodine sufficient while ingesting a dosage of 50 mg of iodine and a year to become iodine sufficient while ingesting a dosage of 12.5 mg of iodine daily. However, the patient needs to be monitored closely with awareness of possible side effects and detoxification reactions.”

Iodine Protects Against Fluoride Toxicity

There is growing evidence that Americans would have better health
and a lower incidence of cancer and fibrocystic disease of the breast if
they consumed more iodine. A decrease in iodine intake coupled with
an increased consumption of competing halogens, fluoride and
bromide, has created an epidemic of iodine deficiency in America.

The toxicity of modern life is impacting iodine levels and in the countries that fluoridate their water this impact is maximized. It is well known that the toxic halides: fluoride and bromide, having structure similar to iodine, can competitively inhibit iodine absorption and binding in the body. All the halogens use the same receptors in the body so fluoride’s danger for people is centered in great part on this fact.

Americans and Brazilians, who are more exposed to fluoride than other populations, have a desperate need for more iodine. Taking iodine in its Nascent form is not only the best way to increase iodine levels in the safest and most effective way possible for adults and children whose thyroids are already compromised, but it will also greatly aid in ridding the body of dangerous fluoride, bromide, chlorine, perchlorates and heavy metals.

In our age of increasing radioactivity and toxic poisoning specifically with fluoride,[1] chlorine, bromide, and even mercury, iodine is a necessary mineral.

Iodine is extremely important since the cells need it to regulate their metabolism. Without it, people are known to suffer from swollen glands in the throat, thyroid diseases, increased fluoride toxicity, decreased fertility rates, increased infant mortality rates, and (with severe deficiency) mental retardation. It has been theorized that iodine deficiency is a causal factor of ADHD in babies of iodine-deficient mothers.

Iodine intake immediately increases the excretion of bromide, fluoride,
and some heavy metals including mercury and lead.Bromide and
fluoride are not removed by any other chelator or detoxifying technique
.

Dr. Kenezy Gyula Korhaz states that iodine chelates heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, aluminum, and halogens such as fluoride and bromide, thus decreasing their iodine-inhibiting effects,[2] especially of the halogens. Iodine has the highest atomic weight of all the common halogens (126.9). Iodine is the only option when it comes to removing these toxic haloids from the thyroid and even the pineal gland where fluoride concentrates, especially when there is a deficiency of iodine in the body.

The human pineal gland contains the highest concentration of
fluoride in the body. Fluoride is associated with depressed pineal
melatonin synthesis and this depression increases one’s chance of cancer.

Dr. David Brownstein says that fluoride inhibits the ability of the thyroid gland to concentrate iodine and research has shown that fluoride is much more toxic to the body when there is iodine deficiency present. Brownstein says that after only one dose of iodine, the excretion of fluoride increases by 78%.[3]

On January 7, 2011, the US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) proposed lowering the recommended level used in the water fluoridation program to 0.7 ppm, because of the very high incidence of dental fluorosis among American children. An amazing 41% of ALL American children aged 12-15 are now impacted by this condition.

Sodium fluoride is commonly used as a rat poison.
Globalists and eugenicists have decided to add it to
water supplies with the message to the public that it
is good for teeth, despite warnings from the ADA stating
that young children risk a disease called dental fluorosis.

After hailing water fluoridation as one of the 10 greatest health achievements of the 20th Century (CDC), the government is calling for a reduction in the amount of fluoride it adds to public water supplies, citing its negative effect on teeth when promotion of healthy teeth is the basic reason given for adding fluoride to the water.

An August 2006 Chinese study found that fluoride in drinking water damages children’s liver and kidney functions.

One of the strongest physiological effects of fluorides in drinking water (e.g. hydrofluorosilicic acid) is on the kidney, a point to consider in light of increased rates of kidney failure during recent decades.[4]

Kidney disease markedly increases an individual’s susceptibility to fluoride toxicity. In healthy adults, the kidneys are able to excrete approximately 50% of an ingested dose of fluoride. However, in adults with kidney disease, the kidneys may excrete as little as 10-20%, and young children may only excrete 15% of an ingested dose—thus increasing the body burden of fluoride and increasing an individual’s susceptibility to fluoride poisoning (e.g. renal osteodystrophy).

Scientific evidence over the past 50 plus years has shown that
sodium fluoride shortens our life span, promotes various cancers
and mental disturbances, and most importantly, makes humans
stupid, docile, and subservient, all in one neat little package.

A Scientific American study concluded that, “Fluoride can subtly alter endocrine function, especially in the thyroid.” The National Research Council of the National Academies in a 2006 report (p. 266) said, “In summary, evidence of several types indicates that fluoride affects normal endocrine function or response; the effects of the fluoride-induced changes vary in degree and kind in different individuals. Fluoride is therefore an endocrine disruptor in the broad sense of altering normal endocrine function.”

[1] Fluoride is associated with cancer and it also accumulates in the thyroid as well as the pineal gland, an important hormone control center. Dr. Jennifer Luke found out that the pineal gland which produces serotonin and melatonin was also a calcifying tissue, like the teeth and the bones, so she hypothesized it would concentrate fluoride to very high levels. Luke had 11 cadavers analyzed in the UK and found very high levels of fluoride in the calcium hydroxy apatite crystals produced by the gland. The average was 9000 ppm and went as high as 21,000 in one case. These levels are equal to or higher than fluoride levels in the bones of people suffering from skeletal fluorosis. Luke hypothesizes that one of the four enzymes needed to convert the amino acid tryptophan (from the diet) into melatonin is being inhibited by fluoride. Melatonin is responsible for regulating all kinds of activities including the onset of puberty. It is thought that the fall of melatonin levels acts like a biological clock and triggers the onset of puberty. In her gerbil study she found that the high fluoride treated animals were reaching puberty earlier than the low fluoride ones. Considering the seriousness of a possible interference by fluoride on a growing child’s pineal gland (and for that matter, elderly pineal glands) underlines the need for higher iodine intake to increase fluoride elimination.

Halogen Displacement

The mechanism behind “halogen displacement” was probably best described by J. C. Jarvis, M.D. (Folk Medicine, Henry Holt & Co., 1958, HB, p. 136), who wrote: “The clinical activity of any one of these four halogens is in inverse proportion to its atomic weight. This means that any one of the four can displace the element with a higher atomic weight, but cannot displace an element with a lower atomic weight. For example, flourine can displace chlorine, bromine, and iodine because fluorine has a lower atomic weight than the other three. Similarly, chlorine can displace bromine and iodine because they both have a higher atomic weight.” Likewise, bromine can displace iodine from the body because iodine has a higher atomic weight. A reverse order is not possible.

Fluoride was utilized because it was found to be effective at reducing
the activity of the thyroid gland—even at doses as low as 2 mg/day.

Today I want to bring the good news that many towns and cities across America are starting to pull the plug on water fluoridation but also that the regular use of Nascent Iodine will go a very long way toward mitigating the damages done in our bodies by the fluoride that we are exposed to.

There are many forms of iodine and please read my lips on this one—they are all good though some are better than others, much better though more expensive. If one cannot find an oral type of iodine, even painting one’s body with topical iodine will help. I do recommend minerals in liquid form rather than solid because of absorption issues.

Nascent_Iodine_Large_Pair Lugol’s Iodine Solution 2% (2 oz)

My favorite iodine, the one I personally use, is Nascent Iodine, and I was involved with the creation of the formula. I also use less expensive Lugol’s and feel perfectly fine about it and recommend it for transdermal use as well as oral when high dosages are required. Nascent iodine is iodine in its atomic rather than its molecular form. It is an iodine atom that has an incomplete number of electrons meaning it can hold an electromagnetic charge; it has a large energy release when consumed because energy is saved. Nascent is better for low dosages, which are necessary when first staring iodine supplementation for iodine/thyroid sensitive people.

Everyone needs to know how to use iodine—it’s as simple as that.

My husband Ron had a small infection at the base of the nail. This very quickly turned nasty and our doctor agreed it looked like gout. Three weeks later Ron heard back from his doctor who was in a mad panic saying Ron had septicemia. On seeing the surgeon that same day, the surgeon wanted to go in and cut the finger open and look at it; she said she would probably have to take it off anyway.

Finally the Nascent iodine we ordered arrived (my husband was refusing to take antibiotics). He started on quite a hefty dose of 15 drops while continuing to apply magnesium chloride transdermally. Two days after starting the iodine there was feeling starting to regenerate and pain again in the finger and Ron thought it looked less discolored. Then the following day the swelling started to go down and the normal healthy pinkness started to return at the base of the finger. Over a period of days it progressively improved with no other treatment than the iodine and magnesium chloride. We also then made a poultice with a mixture of comfrey, honey and garlic for a few days, then the Nascent iodine dripped into a goldenseal ointment.

Dosage: I have given up to 15 drops (400 mcg/drop = 60 mg) of Nascent iodine to my three-year-old so one should see clearly that high dosages can be taken. One can mix up a large bottle of water with Lugol’s iodine added and sip throughout the day or, depending on one’s medical situation, take doses every three hours. Water with Nascent iodine added to it needs to be consumed within an hour or two while the iodine is still in its active state. Doctors treating cancer have given dosages of up to 100 mg a day, though 50 mg is the norm.

With iodine there are plenty of thyroid issues that often complicate things. We’ve learned that iodine will flush the thyroid of other halogens like fluoride and bromide. Many people’s thyroids are in very bad condition and thus it’s good to start with very low dosages and slowly work up. Often taking a thyroid hormone of a natural type is crucial for successful stimulation of thyroid function.
