Lesson 76 – Sugar and Obesity as Prime Causes of Cancer

Decades ago the American Cancer Society said, “Cancer is not caused or cured by any known diet.” Nothing has changed in all these years and the American Diabetes Association maintains a similar position with diabetes. Dr. Robert Fletcher of Harvard University said, “All of us grew up believing that if we ate a reasonable diet, that would take care of our vitamin needs. Even people who eat five daily servings of fruits and vegetables may not get enough of certain vitamins for optimal nutrition. Most people cannot get the healthiest levels of folate and vitamins D and E from recommended diets.”

Dr. Eric Klein, chairman of the Cleveland Clinic’s Glickman Urological and Kidney Institutes said, “The public’s belief in the benefits of vitamins and nutrients is not supported by the available scientific data.” The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) says something very different. According to them 67% of Americans are magnesium deficient. According to Dr. David Brownstein 95% of his Detroit patients are iodine deficient and he tested 7,000 of them. Nutritional deficiencies in the United States and around the rest of the world are anything but rare.

Today people are essentially being poisoned and starved simultaneously by the foods they eat. Obesity is a state of gross malnutrition. It’s safe to say that most obese people consume mostly carbohydrates and processed foods that are hollow and seriously lacking in minerals and vitamins. Malnutrition can occur in people who are eating plenty of food also because they cannot absorb the nutrients from the food they’re eating. 

The public has been led to accept junk food as okay when in fact this food is ruining the health of the general population and ensuring doctor’s salaries. All of humanity is being caught between the hammer of chemical toxicity and the anvil of not having enough micronutrients to stave off chronic and degenerative diseases.

This chapter is like a harpoon aimed at doctors blind spot, their almost complete lack of knowledge and interest in nutrition. Doctors graduate medical school with essentially zero knowledge of nutrition as most people know it. Obesity is the root cause of several diseases including cancer, yet medical schools don’t train doctors on nutrition.

Would they even know that a small glass of juice or soda a day is linked to increased risk of cancer. This is bad news for fans of sugary drinks such as soda and store bought fruit juice. A study has linked drinking just a small glass of a sugary drink per day -- 100 ml, about a third of a typical can of soda -- to an 18% increase in overall cancer risk and a 22% increase in risk for breast cancer.

It's not just soda: Drinking too much fruit juice (or any sugary drink) is linked to premature death risk. "The results indicate statistically significant correlations between the consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks and risk of all cancers combined, and of breast cancer," said Ian Johnson, nutrition researcher and emeritus fellow, Quadram Institute Bioscience.

study from the CDC reveals that 36.6% of American adults consume fast food every day. Fast food consumption is associated with increased intake of calories, fat, and sodium. According to the Credit Suisse Research Institute’s 2013 study, “Sugar: Consumption at a Crossroads,” as much as 40 percent of US healthcare expenditures are for diseases directly related to the overconsumption of sugar. The fact that sugar and obesity are linked to an increased risk of cancer is now becoming well-recognized.

Sugar and inflammation lead to low oxygen conditions. Moderate carbohydrate restriction can reduce markers of chronic inflammation. According to researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, sugar poses a health risk—contributing to around 35 million deaths globally each year.

Researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute in Utah were one of the first to discover that sugar “feeds” tumors. Since sugar is not our ideal fuel, it burns dirty. Cancer loves sugar more than we do. Unfortunately, most doctors do not warn their patients about sugar.

Findings from a Yale study that discovered mitochondria adapt their function in response to sugar. "We found that when sugar increases in the body, mitochondria in some brain neurons rapidly change their shape and their function is altered. These findings imply that alterations in this mechanism may contribute to the development of metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, in which the body is not able to clear high levels of sugar from the blood." For mitochondrial health, the answer appears to become fat-adapted and minimize our sugar intake. Simply put, burn as little sugar over a lifetime as possible.

In September 2013, a report from Credit Suisse's Research Institute revealed that approximately "30%–40% of health-care expenditures in the USA go to help address issues that are closely tied to the excess consumption of sugar." The figures suggest that our national addiction to sugar runs us an incredible $1 trillion in health-care costs each year.[1]

In 2012, a report by Dr. Sanjay Gupta appearing on 60 Minutes featured the work of Dr. Robert Lustig, an endocrinologist from California identified sugar as a major factor in the epidemic of degenerative disease afflicting the United States. The data compiled by Lustig clearly show how excessive sugar consumption plays a key role in the development of many types of cancer, obesity, type II diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

"High sugary drinks consumption is a risk factor for obesity and weight gain," says Mathilde Touvier, research director of the Nutritional Epidemiology Research Team of the National Health and Medical Research Institute at the Paris. And she goes on to say, "obesity is in itself a risk factor for cancer."

In his fascinating book Unnatural Causes, forensic pathologist Dr ­Richard Shepherd observes how, over the years, the dead bodies he examines have changed. One of the most noticeable is the rapid increase in body fat. Obesity levels are rising at such a rate that a 'timebomb has exploded' for our health services. He says: “Unless a patient is homeless or has died of cancer or is so old or poor they could not eat, few are the same shape as the dead of the 1980s when I started practising. “Looking back at forensic photos from that era I am astonished at how thinness was then the norm.”

Currently 2.1 billion people are overweight or obese with many of these people destined to get cancer and yet have cancer blamed on genes instead of real causes like nutritional deficiencies, toxicity, low oxygen, carbon dioxide levels and obesity. Obesity is positively associated with an increased risk of breast and prostate cancer as well many of cancer’s other forms.  Obesity drives cancer progression and is estimated to account for 14% of all cancer deaths in men and 20% in women in the United States while approximately 6% of cancer deaths around the same period of time in Europe were attributed to obesity.[2undefined]According to a report on the global cancer burden, published in 2014, obesity is responsible for an estimated 500,000 cancer cases worldwide each year.

Obesity is the largest cause of preventable death in the world. Obesity is a primary factor related to type 2 diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, gout, and menstrual abnormalities, it has also been linked to several other types of diseases such as atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, negative effects in the lipid profile of the blood, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, complications in pregnancy and surgery, some cancers and gallbladder disease. The deposition of body fat in the abdominal area is more strongly related to the diseases previously said than the deposition of fat concentrated in the peripheral portion (legs).[3]

Obesity is a visible demonstration of what is wrong with civilization, with the agriculture industrial complex, with our diets, with our bodies and state of health, not just physical health but emotional, mental and even spiritual health. Describing conditions in the United States we read, “Obesity rates are at all-time highs, a third of all American teens have not read a single book within the past year, and the average high school senior spends six hours a day on the Internet. On top of all that, we are seeing unprecedented levels of suicide, drug overdoses and liver disease (due to heavy drinking) among our young people.”

Obesity is an obvious cause of disease—it is a disease. However, that does not stop doctors from overlooking it like they do other basic causes of disease like low body temperature, acid low oxygen conditions, toxicity, key mineral deficiencies and stress. Obesity is not an easy health issue to face but it could be made easier if patients could trust the information they receive from the mainstream of medicine. Unfortunately they cannot.

For almost a century we have had a full-scale attack on the psych of the public, informational terrorism it might be called. The medicine and food industries were the first to bathe the public in fake news, and that carries over into today. Dr. David Brownstein lays this out with the yearly CDC flu propaganda, which he considers fake medical news. He explains that “The more people that receive the flu vaccine, the more money the CDC makes. You see, the CDC holds patents on many vaccines including the flu vaccine.”

“How does the CDC overestimate the number of flu deaths?  The CDC accomplishes this by reporting a combined pneumonia and influenza death rate. In 2001 the CDC reported that 62,034 died from influenza and pneumonia.  That year, I would bet that the CDC proclaimed that flu killed over 50,000 Americans.  After a painful hour of searching the CDCs database, I found the true 2001 numbers:  257 died from influenza and 61,777 died from pneumonia.”

How can government think that they could get away with constantly scaring the public to get their flu shots? The answer is that the people in Western countries don’t know better because they have been deliberately misled since before they were born. We live in a world in which many people’s reality is a product of the propaganda fed to them by “news organizations” and Hollywood movies.

Unfortunately, medicine has its political side. The politics of the medical industrial complex are horrific; and it was 15 years ago when I studied this and how it manifests its ugliness in the childhood vaccination program. (See my free E-book The Terror of Pediatric Medicine.)

Doctors could be helping people more, much more and that would start with addressing some of the basic issues that lead to obesity. Fort instance, the faster a person breathes the harder it is to lose weight or keep the weight off once it has been lost. But doctors do not even bother to monitor patients breathing rates, which determines much about our states of health or disease.

It is not a medical secret that one of the basic reasons that people cannot lose weight or regain it quickly after finishing with a diet is there is not enough oxygen to burn because they are blowing off too much CO2 from the blood from breathing too quickly.

Exercise of course leads to intense CO2 production that leads to increased oxygen metabolism and weight loss. The main point is that getting a handle on the three primary gases will help obese patients.

Your body-mass index, or BMI, represents your height and weight. It’s your obesity level. “As your weight increases, so does your resting heart rate — which makes sense, of course, because there’s more tissue to support, and the heart needs to work harder,” notes Emir-Farinas.

Reducing muscle mass and increasing adipose tissue is associated with a higher risk of morbidity and early mortality, this is a common situation when we stop exercising, have a poor eating habits or simply get older.

In an epidemiological study, 588,369 women and 457,785 American men over 30 years of age evaluated the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and the results showed significant increase in the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.[1]

Speaking of fat loss, there are 4 important life habits interlinked, which are physical exercise, eating, breathing patterns and sleep. Failure in any one of these habits will be compromising to health and fat burning.

Speaking of sleep, studies show that the poor-quality sleep increases the risk of developing obesity and other chronic non-communicable diseases; also has influence on eating habits by increasing the vulnerability of overeating with poor diet. Sleep disorders are related to increased cortisol with increased intra-abdominal adipose tissue, as well as low levels of serotonin, which may lead to increased consumption of simple carbohydrates in order to stimulate serotonin secretion.


Just two diet drinks a day raises the risk of dying young by a quarter, a major study reveals. Lovers of Diet Coke and Pepsi Max see their chances of being killed by a heart attack or stroke rocket by more than half, compared to those who avoid the stuff. The World Health Organization research found the dangers from guzzling artificially sweetened pop were up to three times greater than regular sugary drinks.
