About Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)

Published on September 18, 2018

Do I have to use aluminum free baking soda?

Yes, the baking soda you use should be aluminum free….look for one that states 100% sodium bicarbonate on the package, this means no additives are in it.

I have HSV-2 virus will baking soda help in curing this virus?

While we haven’t had specific reports that baking soda will cure this particular virus, we do know that sodium bicarbonate and getting yourself more alkaline can only have beneficial effects in warding off this ailment. Also, the use of iodine should be considered. Iodine is effective against most viruses, fungus, bacteria etc.

You can learn more about these in both of Dr. Sircus’ books:

Sodium Bicarbonate: https://drsircus.com/books/e-book/sodium-bicarbonate-second-edition/

Iodine: https://drsircus.com/books/e-book/iodine/

Would drinking baking soda and water be a remedy or preventative for kidney stones? If so, how much for how long?

Keeping your blood more alkaline will be of help in preventing kidney stones, but you also need magnesium chloride… many studies have shown the tremendous benefit in preventing kidney stones when magnesium is adequate in the body. Also, some studies have shown the benefit of drinking lemon juice made with juice of half a lemon in water twice a day.

Consider getting on Dr. Sircus full protocol.

Consultations

I have emphysema. How much baking soda would I add to what amount of water to reap the benefits of its alkalizing properties?

The best way to judge how much bicarbonate to take is to go by pH testing. You can purchase pH test strips all over the internet. Get some and start checking saliva and urinary pH.  If on the acid side take 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of sodium bicarbonate once or twice a day until the pH gets up to 7.3 or 7.4. There is a safe limit to how much sodium bicarbonate can be consumed and it’s on the package of sodium bicarb, usually no more than 7 doses half teaspoons/day. If under age 60 but only 3 half teaspoons per day if age 60 or older. The danger is too much alkalization which can cause other problems.

The baking soda can be added to an 8 oz glass of water (1/4 to 1/2 tsp) . Check pH daily to monitor need. Make the necessary life-style and dietary changes to remain more alkaline without need for sodium bicarbonate .

Please see the essays at the bicarbonate site:  https://drsircus.com/medicine/sodium-bicarbonate-baking-soda/

EWOT or exercise with oxygen therapy may also be helpful when used under a health care practitioners’ supervision.

Nebulized glutathione has also been shown to be beneficial for some lung problems.

How to avoid Kidney Failure?

To avoid kidney failure, stay away from all fluoride, in foods and water.   The use of several supplements proves beneficial in preventing kidney and heart problems.

These include COq10, L-Arginine, Sodium Bicarbonate, and Iodine in addition to the Magnesium depending on the severity of kidney disease.  Magnesium is contraindicated if renal disease is severe as it can lead to lack of excretion of excess magnesium and build up in toxicity.   Kidney Failure/Renal disease should be a separate category of disease.

I would like to ask you if I can use soda bicarbonate as a treatment for inflammation of tonsils?

You can gargle with baking soda mixed in some water, but you should really get onto Dr. Sircus’ full protocol with magnesium chloride (Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil) and iodine.

All of these can be used as a gargle on the tonsils, but not at the same time, and each should help the inflammation tremendously.

Magnesium Oil and Nascent Iodine are available here: http://www.magneticclay.com/

Sodium bicarbonate can be purchased at most food stores or supermarkets very cheaply.  Just make sure to purchase 100% sodium bicarbonate with no additives.

Is the use of magnesium causing me itchy arm pits?

It is doubtful that the magnesium is causing itchy armpits. Many people use magnesium oil as a deodorant under their arms with no problem. It could be possible that since you have increased your use of magnesium oil, more toxins are being released from your body and are coming out in the armpit area. Either cut back on the amount used and see if it stops or bear with it for a week or so as some skin irritations do go away after you become accustomed to the oil. If irritation is too intense stop use of magnesium oil and apply baking soda to the area instead.

Can I use your protocol for bladder infection?

Dr. Sircus recommends taking 1/2 tsp of sodium bicarbonate in 8 oz of hot water up to 8 times a day to abort cold/flu symptoms. This should also help with bladder infection.  In addition, it is necessary to flush the bladder with plenty of plain water throughout the day. You can read more about this at:

Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) for Cold And Flu

Magnesium can be applied at 1-2 oz/day as a body spray or massage unless kidney function is affected which contraindicates the use of magnesium without proper health care supervision.

Use supplemental iodine to kill offending pathogens.

I have colitis and suffer from cramps and diarrhea. Can you help me with your protocol?

Sodium bicarbonate may indeed be helpful, but magnesium is also needed along with it. What you can try is take some bicarb. in water… about 1/4 to 1/2tsp in a glass of water… and make sure to use magnesium oil transdermally on your skin or in baths or you can put a few sprays into a separate glass of water to drink but if you do this you must go very slowly to avoid further diarrhea….stick to use on the skin for now.

Pay attention to how you respond and don’t over-do the baking soda. A consultation with Dr. Sircus will provide more personal guidance on this.

Reports from people show that this combination helps and some report they only need to do these 2 times per week, though Dr. Sircus would advocate daily use of magnesium to make sure those levels are adequate. The importance of raising alkalinity in these bowel problems is important. Iodine may be a good idea in killing this mycobacterium. Probiotic use and CBD or medical marijuana can also be effective. Please see the full protocol here (with links to recommended products).

Does Sodium bicarbonate help headaches?

Sodium Bicarbonate can be effective against headaches take a glass of water with 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate in water and mix well and drink it down. I have been able to get rid of headaches within a short time by doing this. I used this for severe tension headaches….if your friends are suffering from Migraines or frequent headaches they may not want to employ a frequent use of sodium bicarbonate alone and probably should be using magnesium oil as a topical treatment on their forehead, temples and neck and to make sure their magnesium levels are not deficient. Magnesium Oil should help your headaches as it decreases inflammation and relaxes muscles and blood vessels that are involved in many types of headaches. Drinking more quality water can also help as a headache can be a sign of dehydration.

Can Sodium Bicarbonate Deplete Vitamin B?

Long term heavy use of sodium bicarbonate can cause folic acid deficiencies which in turn may cause poor absorption of Vitamin B12… you can supplement with folic acid to overcome this.

Is Sodium Bicarbonate Bad for the SKIN?

No, we are not aware of damages from using alkaline solutions of sodium bicarbonate on the skin. Of course, too much of anything is not always good and you have to always observe your own reactions.

Is Sodium Bicarbonate safe for pregnancy?

You might want to make sure the pH stays in range with bicarbonate use as it can cause some folic acid deficiency if used long-term. Folic acid should be supplemented if this is the case.

What is the maximum dose for sodium bicarbonate?

The maximum dose is 7 half teaspoons per day. While taking sodium bicarbonate you should be checking your pH daily and let that guide you in how much to take. Problems with over alkalization can occur if you take too much orally.

If you are 65 or older, the maximum dose is 3 half teaspoons/day. Elderly people metabolize bicarbonate much differently than younger people and so they do not need as much in their system at one time as it can accumulate due to natural slowing down of normal bodily functioning.

What is the dose of Sodium Bicarbonate needed to maintain a healthy alkaline pH?

Generally, Dr. Sircus does not recommend any specific maintenance dose of sodium bicarbonate to maintain pH. Instead daily checks of your pH with litmus paper should be made and the dose of sodium bicarbonate should be adjusted according to the pH reading… adding more or less as indicated.

Some people find they can take a regular dose of bicarbonate daily with little problem, but for others long term use may cause problems… if you are using it long term be sure to supplement with Folic acid as this can be depleted.

A break from using sodium bicarbonate should also be taken every 2 weeks and the necessary lifestyle and dietary changes should be made to remain more alkaline without needing so much bicarbonate.

Please feel free to obtain a consultation with Dr. Sircus if you want or need further guidance.

Is it safe to take Sodium Bicarbonate long term for health maintenance?

While many people seem to have no problems ingesting daily doses of sodium bicarbonate, others do, and cautions are given against this. It is better to make lifestyle and dietary changes to become more alkaline so the dependence on sodium bicarbonate is not needed.

Long term use of sodium bicarbonate can cause a folic acid deficiency, so you should consider supplementing with folic acid.

You should still check your pH daily to make sure you do not become too alkaline with daily use. If your pH gets over 7.4 you should cut back on the SB use.

Can I use sodium bicarbonate if I have high blood pressure?

That is a controversial subject. We believe, as some research has shown, that it is only sodium chloride that causes blood pressure problems however to be safe its best to keep an eye of blood pressure while taking sodium bicarbonate and stop its use if the blood pressure elevates too much. Short term use to fight off the flu should not be a problem….but long-term use demands caution.

I am on a treatment with estrogen pills, will sodium bicarbonate interfere with that?

Using sodium bicarbonate should not interfere with the estrogen to the best of our knowledge. Please get Dr. Sircus book on Sodium Bicarbonate where much about using this for cancer is explained. https://drsircus.com/books/e-book/sodium-bicarbonate-second-edition/

Any advice on how to prevent and treat MRSA ?

MRSA is a nasty bug and is considered one of the superbugs plaguing society today.  Originally is was contracted in hospitals only but now is running rampant in the community as well. The infection is long lived and hard to get rid of.

The best ways to prevent and combat MRSA is by keeping a strong immune system, general cleanliness, and using iodine, magnesium and even sodium bicarbonate.  Keep the body generally alkaline, measure with pH strips daily, eat alkaline forming foods and stay away from carriers of the Staphylococcus Aureus bug.  (some people are carriers without showing symptoms of infection themselves).  But keeping our immune systems strong is the best defense. Use of clay internally and externally will also be of help.

When an infection occurs, it is difficult to treat MRSA and use of pharmaceutical antibiotics may be necessary as a last resort.

I began to have a breakout of Psoriasis & Eczema which now is full blown head to toe. What should I be doing that could give me relief?

One of the most effective things to do for psoriasis is to soak in bicarbonate rich baths for full body coverage. Here is an excerpt from Dr. Sircus’ work showing the efficacy of this:

“For centuries, medicated baths have been one of the first lines of treatment for psoriasis. Even today, with sophisticated immuno- suppressive treatments available, Dead Sea salts and spa waters are recognized to be beneficial in the management of psoriatic patients.

To assess statistically the efficacy of sodium bicarbonate baths in psoriasis patients, thirty-one patients with mild-moderate psoriasis were studied. Almost all patients who used NaHCO3- reported a statistically valuable improvement. NaHCO3- baths reduced itchiness and irritation; in general, the patients themselves recognized a beneficial impact on their psoriasis, so much so that they have continued to bathe in NaHCO3- even after the end of the study.”

In addition to sodium bicarbonate, spraying magnesium chloride on the skin will also help to greatly reduce psoriatic lesions.  Use the magnesium spray liberally as long as your kidney function is good.  You can also combine the magnesium and sodium bicarbonate together in baths.   Use about 1 lb. of sodium bicarbonate to start and 1-2 cups of magnesium bath flakes to start out with and then increase the amounts depending on your tolerance. Increase or decrease depending on your own reaction and  check your pH daily to make sure it doesn’t go above 7.4.

It is necessary to get to a more alkaline pH and so lifestyle dietary changes need to also be a part of this therapy.

For iodine dosages and further information, you will need to obtain a personal consultation with Dr. Sircus.  Other supplements can be added, such as vitamin C.

Please see: https://drsircus.com/consultations/

Also, you might be interested in Dr. Sircus’ book on Medical Marijuana, as topical applications of cannabis creams, tinctures and lotions or oils have also been found to be very effective in treating psoriasis.

What is your suggested protocol for the dreaded skin devouring epidemic (necrotizing fasciitis)?

Dr. Sircus’ full protocol would be use in treating necrotizing fasciitis. Since iodine is effective against all pathogens (bacteria, fungi, virus, etc.) this along with the other items on his protocol would be attempted.

It is absolutely necessary to have good immune support along with a specific anti-pathogenic substance to overcome this vicious menace. This would include magnesium chloride, proper body pH with sodium bicarbonate use, and many of the vitamins and minerals that Dr Sircus talks about. Following Dr. Sircus’ full protocol to the extent you can will help to improve the immune system. Another important piece of treatment would be the use of clay packs and edible earth to stop the poisons from deteriorating any more flesh.  The absorptive and antibacterial qualities of natural clays are often effective against drug-resistant bacterial infections.

Can you please point me in the direction of any helpful information on endometriosis – specifically if for any kind of nutritional therapy?

Stress plays a big role in the picture to cause uterine tension and toxicity, often worsened by nutrient deficiency-especially magnesium. Cycles of stress and deficiency create a pattern of hormonal imbalance throughout the body and in some women focus on the uterus. Specifically, in endometriosis, uterine muscle tension and spasm in the fallopian tubes, due to magnesium deficiency, can contribute to uterine blood and tissue migration, and causes the pain and cramping so often experienced.

Dr. Sircus’ protocol with magnesium chloride, iodine, and sodium bicarbonate, plus other essential nutrients  can address this problem in numerous ways. The magnesium especially is important as it balances the hormones which are necessary in endometriosis (often women who obtain balance in hormones report a cessation of symptoms), and the sodium bicarbonate to balance pH and help reduce the growths in the uterus.   If you do a search on the web for magnesium and endometriosis you will find lots of supporting information.

Iodine supplementation has also been shown to reduce and sometimes halt endometriosis.

You might also benefit from a short consultation with Dr. Sircus about this.
