Iodine and Detoxification

Iodine intake immediately increases the excretion of bromide, fluoride, and some heavy metals including mercury and lead. Bromide and fluoride are not removed by any other chelator or detoxifying technique. Dr. Kenezy Gyula Korhaz states that iodine chelates heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and aluminum and halogens such as fluoride and bromide, thus decreasing their iodine inhibiting effects[1] especially of the halogens.

The toxicity of modern life is impacting iodine levels. It is well known that the toxic halides, fluoride and bromide, having structure similar to iodine, can competitively inhibit iodine absorption and binding in the body.

In the case of the halides, which are all antagonistic elements to iodine, they will impede the absorption of iodine. Heavy metals get stored in the same receptors that are looking for iodine.  Almost all of us are exposed to bromine and fluorine and are storing these toxic halides in our iodine deficient receptors. The mechanism of iodine in the cells is very ancient and lacking of specificity, in fact, cells are not able to distinguish iodide from other anions of similar atomic or molecular size, which may act as “pseudo-iodides”: bromide, flouride, chlorine, thiocyanate, cyanate, nitrate,  pertechnate,  and perchlorate.[2]

image

Iodine has the highest atomic weight of all the common halogens (126.9). Iodine is the only option when it comes to removing these toxic haloids from the thyroid and even the pineal gland where fluoride concentrates, especially when there is a deficiency in iodine in the body. In an age of increasing radioactivity and toxic poisoning specifically with  fluoride[3], chlorine and bromide, and even mercury, iodine is a necessary mineral to protect us from harm for immediately these toxic substances will increasingly flow out of the body in the urine.

Humanity is traveling down a deadly path. Awaiting each and every child born on the planet is a life doomed to being poisoned. There is “overwhelming evidence that every child, no matter where in the world he or she is born, will be exposed, not only from birth, but from conception, to man-made chemicals that can undermine the child’s ability to reach its fullest potential — chemicals that interfere with the natural chemicals that tell tissues how to develop and construct healthy, whole individuals according to the genes they inherited from their mothers and fathers,” says Dr. Theo Colborn, Senior Program Scientist, at the World Wildlife Fund. This chapter offers a hugely important answer, a guardian angel in chemical form that we can and actually have to use in the highly toxic age we are all living through. Every pregnant woman should be using iodine and magnesium chloride applied transdermally to initiate protective action from even before conception.

[3] Fluoride is associated with cancer and it also accumulates in the thyroid as well as the pineal gland, an important hormone control center. Dr. Jennifer Luke’s found out that the pineal gland which produces serotonin and melatonin was also a calcifying tissue, like the teeth and the bones, so she hypothesized it would concentrate fluoride to very high levels. Luke had 11 cadavers analyzed in the UK and found very high levels of fluoride in the calcium hydroxy apatite crystals produced by the gland. The average was 9000 ppm and went as high as 21,000 in one case. These levels are at, or higher, than fluoride levels in the bones of people suffering from skeletal fluorosis. Luke hypothesizes that one of the four enzymes needed to convert the amino acid tryptophan (from the diet) into melatonin is being inhibited by fluoride. Melatonin is reponsible for regulating all kinds of activities including the onset of puberty. It is thought that it is the fall of melatonin levels acts like a biological clock and triggers the onset of puberty. In her gerbil study she found that the high fluoride treated animals were reaching puberty earlier than the low fluoride ones. When one considers the seriousness of a possible interference by fluoride on a growing child’s pineal gland (and for that matter, elderly pineal glands) it underlines the need for higher iodine intake to increase fluoride elimination.

Iodine does not chelate mercury. It could increase excretion, but it has no chelation effect like alpha lipoic acid, dmps and dmsa. So stop making such claims.

As for iodine removing mercury. I don’t know. You are making this claim on this site, so at least post evidence for this.

”As for iodine removing mercury. I don’t know. You are making this claim on this site, so at least post evidence for this.”

      Mistake, I meant removing fluoride.

        Dear Alee,

More information can be found on how iodine works to eliminate fluoride in Dr. Sircus’ ebook on Iodine available here with ample references:

        http://drsircus.com/books/

Also you need to be aware that Dr. Sircus does not utilize iodine alone for displacement of fluoride in the thyroid and pineal glands, but has an entire protocol, that when followed can go a long way to eliminate and excess fluoride that will prevent the proper functioning of our glandular systems.
        See his protocol here:

      Dear Alee,

This is a website that reflects information Dr. Sircus has written about and referenced in his books. It might be a good idea if you read the books on Iodine by Dr. Sircus and by David Brownstein on how iodine removes heavy metals and displaces fluoride in the thyroid gland so it can function properly.
All of the IMVA publications are listed here:

      http://drsircus.com/books/

These give expanded information on all the essays posted.
David Brownstein’s books are available from his own website :

And please note that Dr. Sircus does not rely on iodine alone to rid ourselves of any of these major detriments to our health. He has an entire protocol that he employs for this.

I am 64 years old. Menopause was over for me by 50. Started at 42. I’ve been taking Detoxidine nascent iodine for about two weeks. I’ve been sweating very excessively a good portion of each day. And it stinks. I’m too old to have BO. Or hot flashes. During menopause I only had night sweats very rarely hot flashes. Now I have them all the time. I’ve taken to washing very well (especially underarms) with one of those bath scrubbies. Especially when I’m with my boyfriend. (did I mention I stink?) People have mentioned the detox period being very uncomfortable. Is that it. Or does iodine cause a recurrence of menopause symptoms. I was fine last night and this morning but a half an hour after taking the iodine I started sweating like a pig. Then it occurred to me that perhaps it’s the iodine. So here I am researching it. Could it be the brand? I juice veggies and fruits fairly regularly. Should I juice more often or even do a three day fast? Would it make the detox worse or speed it up? Or both? I appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you so much/

      Marquita520,

Using iodine causes increased detoxification of bromides which can have the effects you describe. Try cutting back on the amount you are taking of stop using it for a few days or a week and restart it at a lower dose. This reaction ususally only lasts a few weeks.
Others have been helped with doing a salt loading daily when taking iodine, and some have been helped by taking extra Vit. C and/or magnesium.
You can find information on this on the Internet. Do a search on bromide detoxification.

    Hi,

Where can I get iodine? A good source to remove all these bad things

  • ferrethouse

Iodine has a higher atomic weight than fluoride and bromide and therefore is less reactive and is unable to displace fluoride and bromide. So how does it remove them? What is the mechanism? Thanks.

Hi, I have been trying to take Lugol’s now for a couple of months on and off but having bad detox symptoms because I am high in lead and mercury. I am only on a low dose now (3.1mg daily) but for some reason the detox is coming from my lungs. I have been coughing up phlegm for the past month, it turned greenish yellow for a bit so I increased my Vit C and took some colloidal silver, and the phlegm has gone back to white again but I am so tired of the hacking cough and now I have a wheeze even when standing still or sitting. I don’t think I can stand this any longer – am I doing damage to my lungs by persevering? Is this a normal part of deto with iodine?

    • http://drsircus.com/ Claudia French

      Michelle,

While a cough can be a symptoms of halide detoxification when using iodine, this sounds like its been going on for a long time. Please check with a qualified health care provider to evaluate the cause and the need for additional treatments. You may benefit from some of the other things on Dr. Sircus’ protocol and if you want a consultation he would be happy to help you out with this problem.

Can iodine leach mercury out of my amalgam fillings and drag it throughout my body?

    • http://drsircus.com/ Claudia French

From this essay it says “In an age of increasing radiation and toxic poisoning specifically with fluoride, chlorine and bromide and even mercury, iodine is a necessary mineral to protect us from harm for immediately these toxic substances will increasingly flow out of the body in the urine.”
So while iodine will get rid of some of the mercury that is always leaching from mercury amalgams, 24 hours a day, you can also use a good chelator such as Heavy Metal Detox (HMD) which will ensure its removal from the body, along with other protocol items that will prevent re-distribution somewhere else. Of course the best thing to do is to have the mercury amalgams removed.

I have taken Chlorophyll the brand name ChloroFresh (Alfalfa Juice) Caplets are more concentrated, for Mercury Toxicity, Bromide toxicity, and my Agent Orange exposure while in Vietnam. Most people don’t realize they might also be exposed to Agent Orange here in the United States! Sprayed to defoliate, Military bases perimeters, sewers, ditches along side of roads, and on GMO crops, because the Round Up isn’t working on Round Up ready GMO crops. We all drink the water from, the runoff into the rivers and streams, as we did in Vietnam. Most of these toxins defoliate our intestinal tract. Heavy Metal Blood Test showed a one point drop in blood Mercury in one month. I got out of the Wheelchair and threw away my cane after one bottle. Replenishing many nutrients lost by depletion with supplementation on many levels looking for more. Started with Hair, Skin & Nails with Chlorophyll, Selenium, B Complex, Red Krill has higher levels of Astaxanthin I don’t need reading glasses, Alpha Lipoic Acid with Vitamin E, Kelp, K2&D3 combined, Probiotics with at least 10 active cultures as well as many fermented foods to replenish my defoliated intestinal tract our Autoimmune system , Coconut oil capsules a medium chain fatty acid helped restore my brain eliminating my Parkinson like symptoms, Green Juicing or such as using the Green Machine by Naked, and Chia seed a Super Food. No more Autoimmune problems or thyroid symptoms, no Migraines, no Allergies, Thinning hair and eyebrows restored thick as well as eliminating most of my gray hair. Still taking Chlorophyll 3 1/2 years later it takes up to 5 years to Detox Mercury from having many Mercury fillings replaced read the dust from drilling absorbed through our palate if not ingested or just from the off gassing from chewing and drinking hot liquids! Helped with Thyroid swelling, from bromide, under my chin diminished then started replacing Iodine with Kelp supplements. Many friends and family having Autoimmune conditions such as, MS, Myasthenia Gravis, Type II Diabetes, Agent Orange, Lupus, Colon Cancer, and other Autoimmune conditions greatly diminished or no symptoms! Brother had a Cancerous Kidney removed and was expected to go on Dialysis at the lat minute tried Chlorophyll and didn’t need it. Most likely the Cancer came from the Arsenic in the Chicken feed or his Agent Orange exposure! The Japanese research found it removes the Dioxin such as Agent Orange from rats blood 10 years after the Vietnam War ended. It seems to be working wonderfully for every person that tried it and all have continued using it! Good luck in your searches for restored health. to recap you must, Cut out the Sugar, Detox, replenish nutrients lost needed to rebuild as well as restore and reestablish intestinal flora!

Help, i have been taking 12mg of Iodine daily now for about 2 1/2 weeks to help with my fibrocystic breasts. But I am now having hot flushes, night sweats and chest tightness/palpitaions. I know I am high in lead and possibly other toxins. Is this likely to be a detox reaction or something else? I am going to stop in the meantime as the symptoms are too worrying, although I had noticed some good signs like my skin clearing and becoming less dry and cracked. Would appreciate some advice.

    • http://drsircus.com/ Claudia French

Michelle, yes this could be a detoxification reaction since iodine removes fluoride, bromide, mercury and more. But anytime you feel a reaction that does not feel right you should cut back on the amount of the substance you are using until the reaction stops . You can even stop altogther and restart after a week or so at a smaller dose.

Claudia, thank you. i need to get started soon because my health is going downhill fast. i’ve been having a lot of kidney pain and now suspect it is from the magnesium i have been taking – for constipation. the constipation is related to i believe a long ongoing deydration issue. all things i do think are related to the long term exposure to mercury from amalgams. i have tried clay drinks with psyllium for chelating but it probably has not been enough, as i have not followed any program.

would you recommend some baking soda for the kidney overload? my kidneys are very swollen – i was told by a medical intuitive. he also told me my body could not hold onto calcium and magnesium was not being absorbed due to the mercury in the way of uptake on the cell receptor sites – something like that. i can’t remember exactly.

when will the book be published? i would like to try Dr. Sircus’ protocol as soon as possible.

    • Claudia – IMVA Staff

      Saki,

You really need to get a consultation with Dr. Sircus about how to proceed. You are describing swollen kidneys which would indicate some problem with kidney function and is a contraindication to using magnesium.

Dr. Sircus needs a great deal more information from you before he can direct you in what to do. I’m a nurse, not a doctor so I can’t tell you specifically what or how much to take.

Sodium bicarbonate might help you but follow the directions and do not exceed the maxiumum dosage, and keep track of your pH daily.

Clay by itself may not chelate mercury……but it WILL help to move chelated mercury out of the body instead of allowing it to be re-distributed somewhere else. Use it with a good chelator and for sure make sure you stay well-hydrated with a good quality water. Avoid anything with fluoride in it.

Dr. Sircus’ book is still in the editing process so it will be a few weeks yet before its published.

Please consider a consultation with Dr. Sircus:

    Hello,

What is Dr. Sircus’ protocol for mercury detox?

I had eight old amalgams replaced in June as I was told that the mercury was causing my long term insomnia problem. Now I have been taking all kinds of supplements, lots of minerals, trying to build up some strength, but I don’t feel any better and still can’t sleep.

I’m now wondering about use of iodine as well as a helpful agent in displacing the mercury.

    Thanks.

    • Claudia – IMVA Staff

      Hi Saki,

Dr. Sircus recommends using only a good natural chlelator of mercury like HMD by Dr. Georgiou along with Rejuvenate….a superfood that contains a good amount of chlorella and spirulina and of coures Magnesium chloride without which most detoxification protocols will not work well, as its a necessary part of the entire chelation process. Iodine does chelate some mercury , fluoride, bromines and chlorine from our bodies so its good to keep our iodine stores up too.

Selenium is also important in chelating mercury and edible clay is going to help move the mercury right out of the body so it does not re-deposit in other tissues.

Dr. Sircus protocol for this will be included in his soon to be published book: Treatment Essentials.

    Hello,

I’m a health nut, and recently developed some anxiety and panic attacks (possibly entering peri-menopause though my cycle is clock-work normal) and put myself on iodine from kelp at the highest recommended dose.
Within 2 months, I have massive floaters in my eyes and have developed tingling in random extremities.
I also have at least 8 really old (1 of them really nasty) amalgams in my teeth and am a dedicated gum-chewer. I was not aware that iodine can chelate, etc. but now am wondering if I mobilized the mercury…..or added to it since kelp also contains some mercury. I went on iodine to help correct
any possible hormone issues, but now realize that mercury can be the culprit in this case as well.
Incidentally, my anxiety did improve a little following minimal kelp use, I just think that I was not
able to absorb enough of it. I was also taking a cal-mag supplement and continue to do so.
I’d like to order some Nascent and see if that corrects the side issues and gives better results.
    Comments?

My son was born without a thyroid gland and is now 15. I have asked many endocrine specialists up to and including Ray Peat about the bodily functions of iodine apart from for the thyroid gland and basically have been told there is none. The Edgar Cayce readings state that iodine cleanses all the glands – ducted and ductless. The post about iodine and melatonin is very intesting as my son developed siezures after being put on melatonin for his sleep disorder. Although the hospital specialists said the siezures would stop after the melatonin was discontinued they did not. I am trying to feel my way into iodine supplementaion for him but as his case would be quite an unusual one I wonder if anyone would have a clue whether iodine (in the form of Atomidine) should/should not be given in the morning alongside his thyroid replacement (thyroid extract) medication. We are currently only using one drop a day off and on and trying to sift through the reactions I see. The major complication being my son does not speak and has all the hallmarks of cretinism.

I’ve been trying to learn a little about iodine. What is the difference between the iosol iodine and the lugol’s or the idoral iodine that everyone talks about other than the dosage that you get from the different kinds.

    • Claudia – IMVA Staff

      Kip,

There are all kinds of different iodines available. Some have potassium iodide and some do not. Dr. Sircus prefers using nascent iodine which is an iodine in the atomic state and can provide the proper form of iodine needed by various organs. Other types of iodines need to be metabolized to the form needed in the body. You can read Dr. Sircus’ book on Iodine available here:

      http://publications.imva.info/index.php/e-books/iodine-cancer-diabetes-radiation.html

Or you can contact the mfg. of the iodines you are considering. We do not know the differences between all of the types available.
Another source for you would be Dr. David Brownstein, one of the doctors who specializes in high dose iodine treatment. (Iodoral).

    Hello Joseph:
I chanced on this website serendipitously and have
read many of the above comments.
Chances are strong that a lack of magnesium
has lead to your eye twitching.
It is my opinion from the extensive reading that I have
done that using chelating agents such
as idodine and/or potasium iodide might
also leach out of the system those water
soluable minerals that are very vital for
the human body to function properly.
You should ask you doctor when you next visit him/her
that your magnesium levels be checked. This is sometimes
done routinely with a complete chem-screen workup.
400mgs daily is a safe non-toxic level for most people.
If you have allergies make sure it is free from common
    allergens used as compounding agents.
Also make sure you are getting enough
B-vitamins as these vitamins are generally not stored
for too long and di-uretics and possibly chelating agents can leach them from the body.
I hope this info was helpful.

    Hi,
I have high levels of mercury and was following a detox regimen of selenium for a few months. The selenium only made me feel slightly better. Then I was also diagnosed with high bromide so I began taking Iodoral, starting with 1/4 of a tablet per day and increasing to 3/4. (At the time I was unware that iodine supplementation can affect mercury, but the information I have just read on this site indicates that it does)

After a month on the Iodoral I felt amazing. I was sleeping through the night and waking refreshed, my brain fog cleared, and I could think clearly again. However after a week I suddenly slipped back to my old state, in addition to breaking out in acne and developing an eyelid twitch that lasted for 6 weeeks.

I realize you don’t have access to my complete labs, but could you please speculate as to what might have happened?

For instance, does iodine mobilize mercury from within tissues or does it chelate it in the blood? If the former, is it possible that I was going too fast with the iodoral, and after initially feeling better from shaking some mercury loose I simply had too much of it floating in my system, leading to symptoms such as the eyelid twitch?

I took a break from all supplements and then tried to slowly start again in order to repeat my success, but after 3 months have had no luck. Any insights or leads for further research would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

      Dear Joseph,

Its possible that iodine might have mobilized the mercury and its settled in other areas. You may need to take some additional products to ensure its release from your body like edible clay, clay baths or even a chelator like HMD (Heavy Metal Detox). Dr. Sircus will be publishing a very good essay on chelation of heavy metals withn the next few weeks…so watch for this!

Also, no method of chelation is going to be very successful without adequate stores of magnesium in your body, so make sure you are supplying additional magnesium. All of this is explained in the second edition of the Transdermal Magnesium Treatment book available through amazon.com.

You may also need to be on a lower dose of Iodoaral. High doses of iodine can cause temporary skin eruptions..

    Dear IMVA Staff,

This week I took Biotics Research Corp. – Liquid Iodine Forte. The recommended dosge is 1 Drop = 150 mcg Iodine(as potassium iodide). Other ingredients are purified water, citric acid and sodium benzoate. I suspect that I may have Fibrocystic Breast Disease.

    On Monday, 19th Sept. – I took 1 drop.
    On Tuesday, 20th Sept. – I took 8 drops.
    On Wednesday, 21st Sept. – I took 15 drops.
    On Thursday, 22nd Sept. – I took 17 drops.

I increased the dosage because my husband had been taking one Iodoral tablet daily, which contained 20 mg of iodine and 30 mg of iodide (as potassium salt) per tablet.

Since I understood that 150 mcg = 0.15 mg, I thought that if my husband is taking 50 mg of iodine/iodide daily, I could increase my dosage gradually. I had also confirmed that people took 5-50 mg daily on a few different websites.

However, throughout Thursday, my back ached as if I hadn’t slept properly the night before. By about 10 pm on Thursday evening, my kidneys felt like they were ready to burst. Also, my abdomen felt so swollen, as if I was about 7-8 months pregnant, and so it was quite difficult and painful to breathe with my lungs.

My husband searched the internet for a remedy, and consequently, I had a couple of glasses of hot milk and Milo (chocolate). After a short while, I started to feel a bit better, so I went to sleep.

On Friday morning when I woke up, it was very, very painful for me to move, especially, in my abdominal area. I forced myself to get up and have a shower. Throughout Friday, the pain gradually almost disappeared.

However, on Saturday morning when I woke up, it was very painful again for me to move my abdominal area. I forced myself again to get up and have a shower. By Saturday night, the pain had almost disappeared.

I researched on the internet for a couple of hours for some clues as to what happened to me. However, all the symptoms for allergic reactions, detoxification and healing crisis didn’t seem to apply to me.

I would really appreciate it, if you could please advise me as to your thoughts on my experience.

    Kind regards,

    Amanda

      Dear Amanda,

Our advice would be to contact the people who you bought your iodine from and get their recommendations or see what they say.. You may even want to report your reaction to the appropriate organization . However it appears you were .not under the care of a qualified health care practitioner to determine proper dosing for you. We are not familiar with all the iodine products available on the retail market and cannot advise on each specific type.

Your husband was taking Iodoral and you were taking Potassium Iodide…..not at all the same thing. and obviously too much for you. Please be careful when determining your own treatment. Symptoms of a potassium iodide overdose are not known but caution is given in most reliable sources : 3 drops instead of 2 drops can make the difference in causing toxic symptoms.

I took Iodine for about 1-2 months. I had my thyroid killed by radiation years ago for hyperthyroid. (Graves Disease) After taking the iodine I broke out in a severe rash (hives). I have had this rash now for 4 months. Is it a reaction from the iodine or just a coincidence in the timing. I am now having to take prenisone and antihistimines to control the hives.

    • Claudia – IMVA Staff

      Lois,

Its very hard to tell what is causing the hives from the information you have given. Overdoses of iodine do cause skin problems including hives in some people, but this usually goes away quiickly after the iodine is stopped, if that’s what caused it. You don’t mention what type or brand of iodine you used, when, or for how long before this rash appeared….so its impossible to say for sure what its from.

April: thanks for sharing your healing experience with taking nascent iodine supplement. May I ask what was the dosage that you took and maintained for a few months after the initial recommended dosage from the bottle? And with that dosage, how fast a 1oz bottle would run out? I heard that dosage in mcg (microgram) is not enough to prevent radiation damage to the thyroid, which was what lead me to the topic of iodine supplementation.

I am glad to find out from IMVA that iodine supplement can also chelate heavy metals! That’s amazing and would like to try it! I guess, for this function, I can just follow the bottle’s instruction, right? Or should I take more?

    Thank you.

Hi there, I have been using iodine for 10 months now, I started out at the bottle recommended dosage and built up to a high dosage and kept it there for several months, believing that I was probably very deficient from what I have read.
I have some questions about detoxification of heavy metals:
a)After taking a high dose for a while can the iodine begin to chelate the metals and/or toxins so fast that you can sort of have a ‘healing crisis’ . Just for example, I have never had any form of urinary tract type infections ever, but I passed alot of uric acid crystals from my kidneys and one of the ureters actually got blocked right off, I could see feel them moving along intermittently and I could see them in my urine. I pulse dosed for a few days with the iodine and went to my Doctor who said I had a bladder infection, but I had no pain and I’ve never heard of anyone getting a bladder infection with no pain, everyone I knew who’s ever had one said it was very painful. Also the little bit of discomfort that I did feel was not where near my bladder, but on my left side right about where y left ureter runs down from my left kidney.

b)Iodine must really boost the sense of well being and energy levels, becasue I’m 47 and I have more energy than I had when I was in my 20′s and I feel so happy and upbeat, I get snarky every now an then, but I get over it so quick! It is so awesome!

    c) Is there a list anywhere of some symptoms or ‘healing crisis’ signs just as a guideline, I have alot of people who are very interested in taking iodine but they are real scared, they read once that iodine is bad and you get enough from salt and might overdose.
A 60 some year old friend took 2 drops 2 times a day for about 2 days and she’s sure it gave her heart palpitations, I told her it was likely the lack of it and was likely the alcohol( a bit of red wine daily, she heard it’s good fro the heart) and the cigarettes she smokes, but for people like her it would be comforting I guess to know if there are some little signs or symptoms to watch out for. (The iodine , by the way ,is the nascent iodine from LL magnetic clay, so it is very safe to take orally). I have looked around on the internet for answers to my questions, but there is not much said about ‘healing crisis’ type reactions or symptoms or whatever we’d call them, maybe healing symptoms’ eh? Any way thanks in advance to whoever answeers, April

      April,

There really is quite a bit on the Internet about Healing Crisis, please take another look. There are also a couple of books that you might find interesting. Check out this information on Shirley’s Wellness Cafe.

People can have a healing crisis at any any point in treatment, but yes it will come stronger if you are especially aggressive with dosing.

      Kim,

Povidone Iodine is not advised for oral intake. Its used for wounds etc, because it has surfactants and sticking agents in it.
