It will be a long winter because it already started in some places. Winter began at the end of summer. It is a pattern that has been building for years, with snow coming earlier than usual. On September 16, California issued its earliest snow advisory in the past 20 years with an alert for residents in the Sierra Nevada, according to the National Weather Service.

I have watched the weather worldwide for 16 years like a hawk, with events on the ground (weather) convincing me that we are facing global cooling, not manmade global warming. It’s a good thing they changed global warming to climate change because it is changing. It is getting more violent, but in terms of temperature, it is cooling.

Arctic sea ice is expanding remarkably, setting new records for the first three weeks of September. For the first time in recorded history, the Arctic sea ice area has grown by more than one million square kilometers during this period. The below chart shows the unprecedented growth for the time of year in satellite data extending back to the late-1970s:

“If the hottest year ever can’t precipitate ‘ice-free’ conditions in September, what’s it going to take?” asks zoologist Dr Susan Crockford. Some think pumping seawater over the frozen Arctic Ocean could offer humanity a final chance to save the region’s vanishing sea ice. However, the ice is not vanishing at all. Field trials conducted this year in the Canadian Arctic to thicken sea ice using water from the ocean below have proved successful, says UK start-up Real Ice.

The Alps

The European Alps continue to see extraordinary early-season snow, with totals breaking records left, right, and center. It was still summer, yet a powerful cold front swept Western and Central Europe, dropping record-breaking summer snow upon the Alps. The snowfall began when an Arctic front —with temperatures 20C below average— collided with a storm system pushing up from Italy.

Austria, Switzerland, Germany, and other alpine areas now find themselves buried under as much as 2 meters (6.6 feet) of snow, with the forecasts calling for more. More snow came, and now they say that the European Alps have experienced their heaviest September snowfall in living memory, with as much as 2.5 meters (8 feet) accumulating at higher elevations and healthy dustings noted below 700 meters (2,300 feet).

Antarctica Nears -112F

Vostok, Antarctica, is experiencing an intense cold spell as winter drew to a close. The minimum temperatures recorded from September 14 to September 17, 2024, show a dramatic dip, with September 14 reaching -78.7C (-109.7F), followed by -77.6C (-107.7F) on September 15, and -77.8C (-108F) on September 16.

Pumpkin farmers are blaming an unusually cold, wet spring and summer for a drastically reduced crop this year. The Trusley Pumpkin and Potato Patch at Goldhurst Farm, for example, which usually produces up to 15,000 pumpkins, expects only 1,000 this season. “I can’t remember a year this bad,” said farm worker Catherine Ferris.
